Is it normal that i have an overwhelming urge to push things that aren't there?

I've had a few episodes where I have an overwhelming urge, almost like a bad itch, to thrust my arms out in front of me and push. There is always nothing there, and I know that if I do it, the feeling will get stronger and worse. The one time I actually acted on this impulse, I was even more strongly urged to almost "flail" my arms. Is this normal? These episodes can be quite scary and I generally feel very sick afterwards.

The flailing was most likely the air pushing back at you from the force you initially exerted into the air. You probably want to do it even more the second time because the force from you to the air and back is like a bouncing ball. The harder you bounce it, the higher it goes. This could also be why you're sick afterwards.

I hope you find the solution. Funny, this brings back memories when i was very little; i was showing my mother that i know how to write the letter 'A'. so i made three lines in the air with my finger. She then asked why i waved my hand which i replied "to erase it". She just laughed. I'm glad that didnt progress any further.

  • That sounds like it would be a frightening experience. :( I don't think that's normal and it's not something I've ever heard of. Hopefully, someone here will have some better insights than me. Have you ever brought this up with a physician or psychiatrist?

I have, and they said it may be dissociation. I have been going through some major health issues and I originally thought it was stress, but i'm beginning to feel as though it may be something more.
