Is it normal that i hate when people try to cheer me up?

I find it annoying when people try to shove positivity down my throat. I dislike hearing things like "Smile! You're so beautiful and wonderful and awesome!!". I'm not sure why is that. It comes off as insincere and illogical to me. And a little bit forceful too. It's like I have to be happy and grateful for the compliment, because otherwise I'm just bitchy and ungrateful. What's so fun about hearing something like this? And it's not like I can't be positive myself. I'm just a realist.

Being a realist is more useful to society and certainly more useful to yourself. Kids can run around acting like that. You sound like you are an adult, approaching an adult age or at least at an age when you are questioning the stupid idea that life is supposed to be "sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows" all the time.

Remember there is a difference between being a realist and a pessimist. Pessimists let bad situations defeat them, realists know bad situations happen, deal with it, and learn from it.

Yeah I hate that too, because it's often said to make the speaker feel more comfortable and minimise the difficulty of your situation.

The other response I absolutely HATE is the newage (rhymes with sewage) crap that we attract the bad things that happen to us

Same here. I remember meeting a boy who was trying to convince me that my bad luck is just a result of my "negative energy" and everything will be fine if I start being an optimist. Ugh.

Isn't it just total crap? Talk about blaming the victim! The worst example I've ever come across was a Jewish woman who spouted this stuff and when I asked her if that meant her parents' family in Europe had chosen to be gassed by the Nazis, she said yes ...... I asked her if in that case we should all thank people who oppress us because they must be treating us as we want to be treated, and she said yes ........... that relationship didn't last long!

What's just as annoying is someone trying to convince you to not be pissed off at something that is pissing you off. Like I got a really bad haircut and this family member tried to tell me that having ones sideburns shaved off was in style now. Go blow a goat.
