Is it normal that i hate it when people say, "you can't compare x to y!"

This is basically an Apples to Oranges sort of thing. The thing is I've longed believed you can compare apples to oranges. you can compare anything to anything. But some people insist that it is impossible and i find it annoying. These sort of things usually pop up in conversations about movies, video games, or music.

example1: You can't compare BF3 to MW3! They are completely different games!
Example2: You can't compare Nirvana to Alice in Chains. They are completely different bands!

They CAN be compared! Am i Wrong?

I'm gonna nerd out a little here ...
In programming you can only really compare two objects if they're the same class, meaning they have the same set of attributes.
So you couldn't compare anger to a chair, because one is and emotion with attributes like "intensity" or "recipient", the other is a physical object with attributes like "width" and "height". It just doesen't work.

However BF3 and MW3 can obvioussly be compared. They're not only both video games, they are even the same genre (FPS). You can look at each attribute like "map size", "equipment variety", "community" and find out that BF3 is clearly better :D

Now I don't know Alice in Chains, but Google said it's a grunge band, so comparing it to Nirvana should be no problem.

You CAN compare them, but you shouldn't because they are two entirely different things.

"I hate oranges! The skin tastes awful and that's why apples are better!"

Well no shit, you're not supposed to eat the skin off an orange.

I guess you can compare anything when it comes to enjoyment factor, but when it gets down to the fundemantal programming of the game, inner workings of film or music then no, some things can't be compared, like the tactical squad based gameplay of battlefield and the lone wolf, twitch based gameplay of cod

But they are two entirely different letters! They don't even give the same sound!
