Is it normal that i get sleepy when i'm very stressed?

When I'm really stressed, like I've just had a big fight with a loved one or something, I automatically get extremely tired and then proceed to get the best, deepest sleep ever. Like out cold.

It doesn't happen for minor stress (I don't get great sleep when this happens) or when something horrible is happening like a life threatening situation with a loved one (then I just tremble uncontrollably and can't sleep at all, can hardly walk because I'm shaking so badly, and dry heave or vomit; same with when I'm getting very sick). Only with something serious, but not horribly serious, if that makes sense.

For me, it's almost like sleep allows me to escape reality in that moment and it's just blackout deep sleep. Though it's not really a choice I make, but a natural reaction my body does.

I've been this way since I can remember.

This happens to me too when i'm stressed or anxious.
I have social anxiety and sometimes on my way to a social event I suddenly get so sleepy I can hardly keep my eyes open. I feel energized again as soon as my stress level or anxiety level has gone down. I don't know how common sleepiness is as a stress response but to me it definietely makes sense as it could be the bodys way of trying to escape the stress through making you fall asleep.

  • It’s your body saying “fuck this shit I’m out”.
