Is it normal that i downvote comments simply because i disagree with them?

I down vote comments because I disagree with them or don't like their message. is it normal to be a douche bag like this?
Should the down vote button be removed? I tend to think it should.

Isn't the down vote button there for exactly that reason? To show disapproval for the content of the post? It certainly isn't there as a popularity vote, as most of the children on here use it.

I don't even use it. If I seriously and strongly disagree with someone, I will say something but since this is the internet, I hardly care.

That being said, starting a 3-4 day long debate about some dumb bullshit where we all spew 6 paragraph long posts that none of us actually read but rather skim through is something that I do not have a whole lot of time to do nowadays...

  • Meh. I don't like the idea of voting systems when discussion can be held. It makes it too easy for people to downvote purely based on them disagreeing without any valid reason or reasons that could be shown illegitimate, just because they dislike you, or to troll.

It's even worse given the karma system which makes it so that users with low thumbs ratings can't use the site as much. I'm lucky in the sense that I was here before the karma thing got put in place, which I heard makes such users not part of the karma system but I do feel sorry for some people that come on this site with a different mind set, different views, and maybe even the ability to prove their views as correct. People here, or should I say enough people here will jump on you if you don't agree with their beliefs, which will result in the people being jumped on being thumbed down to oblivion even when they're clearly wrong, which will effect their ability to use the site because of pettiness.

So I think they should get rid of the thumb down feature. Keep the thumbs up feature perhaps but the thumb down feature can effect new users too much.

To be honest, the thumbdown feature is kind of pointless. Was it Christopher hitchens or Stephen Fry that said something along the lines of when someone says they're offended, "so what? That's not an argument, it's pointless" Something along those lines...It's kind of like that...Someone just saying "I disagree"...So what? Essentially that's what the thumbs down feature is...A bunch of people disagreeing without giving a reason which makes their disagreement useless, which makes the whole idea of the thumb down feature useless.

God damn it, I need some sleep. I went on far too much than I should of. >_>

Depends what you disagree with them on. If you think the best dessert is ice cream, and someone comments that the best dessert is cake, then for you to thumbs down them would be unnecessary. But if you think world peace is a wondeful thing, and someone comments that genocide is awesome, then thumbing them down wouldn't be such a terrible thing.

It's all about context. But the thumb buttons are there for your use just as much as everyone else. Honestly, use them as you'd like. I don't think it should be removed. No one is going to die if you thumbs down them.

A good argument against something I agree with deserves an up vote. I usually don't down vote but poor argumentation or emotional thinking makes me do it.

If you are going to downvote my messages - that is okay. However, I can only ask you to also engage in a discussion. I want to know why you disagree with me, what reasons you have for seeing things differently.

I am strongly for keeping the thumb down option, by the way.
