A lot of what I hear people say is just sounds coming out of their mouths. I can tell from their tone that they expect a response so I say something incomprehensible back to them.
Well, I'm having that same "issue" about the tone thing and "atmosphere" or "mood" yeahhh
But in all seriousness if I can't understand some one I ask them to repeat it until I can understand or they get fed up and give up. I try to make it seem like its not there fault so I'll say oh I'm sorry I had my stereo up really loud and my ears are still ringing or something like that.
For goodness sake, get your hearing checked! That's probably the reason and pretending to understand when you don't could make your life unpleasantly complicated

And I didn't bother with Spanish becos that would just be to simple. If you get all of these I can scramble the letters in them as well... :)
Doing better than me, I'm stuck with my Monty Python Hungarian-English phrase book - which is only useful if I want to get arrested in Hungary.

spanish would probaley be the last language i would wanna learn. first comes japanese ;)
