Is it normal that i don't understand drug addiction?

If I had the gall to try a cigarette or snort crack, and found myself craving it the next day, I'd get one of my crazier friends to tie me up in their closet (or guest bedroom) and bring me a jug of water a day until I came to my senses.

I don't get it either. 11
I resent that; I do drugs leisurely. 2
I am an addict. 3
I know you're addicted to something you hypocrite! 0
It just happens... 3
I don't care, I'm in rehab and I will get better. 1
It turns into an intense mental desire you cannot resist. 7
Smoke weed everyday. 9
It's like anorexia. You should never say "just eat". Nor "just quit". 3
Medical marijuana is the only exception, otherwise I feel the same. 2

Makes sense. People might say you're oversimplifying it, but if you used that exact approach, you'd never get addicted to anything. (I know you were being a bit facetious - but literally, it's a legitimate point).

Addictions are all different - different people, different drugs. But generally, I think they all tend to creep up on people.
Your approach is great, it's just not what most people do. And I think some people are more susceptible to addiction than others, basically depending on whether they're happy within themselves or not.

But as long as you realise not understanding something shouldn't be a reason to dismiss it. I could never understand how anyone could become an alcoholic - hangovers suck so much. But then years later I found myself with a bit of a drinking problem.. Just saying, sometimes these things don't make sense until you experience them or witness them yourself.

If only it was that simple.
You sound like someone who couldn't possibly understand even if they tried & to be honest, I hope you never have to.
Addiction - being a slave to drugs - is a cunt of a thing.

You're never addicted until suddenly you are &, honestly, your childlike, overly simplistic view just makes you appear ridiculously naive in my opinion

Well I've never have to. And they have to try it to get addicted. I'll never try.

Most people don't have friends like that; usually their friends are experimenting with drugs with them. You're also assuming you'll have the same mindset once you become addicted, which is possible, but highly unlikely. You're far more likely to hide it from anyone who would help you in order to get your next fix. Addictive substances rewire your brain that way, or some shit like that.

If only it were that simple, there would be no such thing as drug addiction.

There are some things you can't understand unless you try it or it happens to you. For example a person can't perfectly describe what it feels to be high on LSD, you have to try it.

Your brain can't comprehend or understand it but that's part of being human. I had similar thoughts to something else then it happened to me.

Some people need only try opiates once to be an addict for life. Being tied up in a closet won't help. Nothing will change the fact that from that first hit you are a slave to the drug.
There are other less obvious substances that once one has become accustomed to their use, are an addiction.
I would find it absolutely unbelievable if you don't actually have an addiction or two. Not to drugs as such, but coffee, McDonald's fries, chocolate or some other commonly consumed substance. Then there are those addicted to actions such as sex or eating. Nobody is beyond addiction.

If I had to choose something I might be addicted too...hmm.. I love sushi, but not to that point since I haven't had it in about 3 1/2 weeks.. I love anime, but I haven't watched it in a week because I've been both working and I'd rather play Mabinogi... I don't play Mabinogi everyday even though I love the game... I'm fairly skinny but it requires drinking lots of water everyday and I can't eat after 6 pm unless I haven't eaten all day...I guess I'm obsessed about my maintaining a thin frame...? So I'm addicted to staying healthy? That sounds good though, but only if I don't go overboard since 2 months ago I passed out and had to be taken to the hospital.

It's not an easy thing to explain, but becomes sort of a need, and there's just kind of this frustration that you have when the drug isn't available. It's hard to overcome through sheer willpower. That being said, it sounds like your plan for overcoming it is pretty foolproof. I might even use it to get myself off cigarettes.

If you've ever been depressed, then you would probably understand it better. People living depressed lives are probably more susceptible to becoming a drug addict because it serves them as an escape from "hell" basically. In that sense, I can understand it.

Some drugs are nastier than others to withdrawal from. I get addicted to caffeine every couple of years. But after 3 days, withdrawal is complete and I don't want it anymore.

Withdrawaling from nicotine was a different story. It was terrible. Like screaming into a mirror terrible.

I don't get it either. I know some people will get angry over this but I think there are people who can't get addicted to things. I had a friend on heroin try to explain against it by showing a video of someone in withdrawal, and I just think of that was me, I would sai I deserve to feel shitty as possible and that punishment for doing something like that. where does wanting more come in? Yeah I know it's hard to control your mind from making your body to do something, but nothing's impossible and people do it all the time.

And the drug addicts will say this point of view is wrong and stupid because they obviously can't understand it, just as we can't understand theirs.

No one plans to be or become an addict, I know it was said already but I think it needs to be said again. I know the substances I've used and consumed I always took because to me it was better than anything prescription wise would have done to me, anti-depressants, anti-psychotics, mood inhibiting, etc.

Eventually you get so isolated from making these terrible decisions that the substance becomes a social connection for you, far easier to spend time with than actual people, once that occurs and it occurs with every addict (even those that spend time getting high with other addicts) you have a serious problem.

Its a cycle of either guilt, shame, and/or depression and than using to escape those feelings, than returning to those feelings again for using.

I understand the whole "no one sets out to be an addict" thing but I think the OP meant experimenting just one time, which is what I've wondered about as well. Everyone I ask makes it out to be impossible, but I think it's a different mentality that keeps people coming back to something. As you said depression and so on - it's a different brain chemistry that affects everyone differently. If someone is at a point of their life where they can't control their mind then I understand it'd be difficult to stop, but not everyone is the same, right? I could be over simplifying but I just don't understand how it's impossible to stop oneself from physically doing something just because their mind/physiology tells them to do it. Let's say if you were locked in a room or paralyzed or something, what force would magically get more drugs into you? Sorry if it seems a dumb question but I just don't understand the idea that trying hard drugs just once automatically turns everyone a hopeless addict.
