Is it normal that i don't know what exactly differentiates rebecca black?

Okay, we get it. Friday is a terrible song. The lyrics are banal and all about "partying parting (yeah!)", the melody is flat and used, and her voice (even/especially with Auto-Tune) sounds like that of a dying goat. The votes on the official video on YouTube indicate that the people have spoken: That song clearly sucks.
My question is this: Is it normal to not really understand why people can show their true disgust for Friday, but that other popular "artists" (like Ke$ha, for example) make the cut? Honestly, besides the goat thing, I can't make much sense of it. Do people really secretly hate this style of music or am I missing something here?

It's like bullying at school but on a larger scale. If we are told someone is cool then we fawn all over them, whereas if we are told someone isn't cool, we pile hatred upon them.

Truth is, there's often no difference. It's hard not to go with the herd, but we should at least try. Especially when it's on a larger scale.

Seriously, who wants to live in a society that bullies teenage girls (often without even hearing her whole song)? How can anyone make a judgement based solely on other people's judgements?

The song isn't great in my opinion but when the Spice Girls released Wannabe, my sister and I turned to each other with :O faces and both thought it had to be a practical joke.

The music industry isn't really about what's good. It's about what people can be conned into listening to. And the industry has done a great job with Rebecca Black. More people have heard that song than merit alone would have allowed.

  • Yeah, it sounds the same as every other pop song, so why is hers the only bad one?

To me, every artist/group in the last 10 years lacks talent.
The standards for being a good singer/entertainer are nonexistent now. Anyone can speak to music and get a label, it used to be that you needed a good live voice, range and your own songwriting knowledge. Now we've people like this Taylor swift girl, who just talks to music, bops around with a guitar and reaps money from her autotune.
