Is it normal that i don't keep up with politics, pop culture and find it boring

I research a lot of things and I'm very smart but when I hear people talk about politics and pop culture I wonder how they know every little aspect about what's going on. I don't follow those topics (or any topics really) and hear about things by word of mouth or from trending news topics on various sites but they don't really pique my interest. It seems like everyone and their mother knows whats up and I'm just here wondering why it matters and feeling like Joey Tribiani on that episode with the Encyclopedia. I kind of hate politics but I know the gist of what goes on. Pop culture is so boring to me and it just seems like something to distract everyone from the drabness of life but its so repetitive I just never cared about it much. Is this normal? Is everyone else just faking what they know? Does anyone else feel that these conversation are boring/pointless?

Politics and pop culture are two very different things. At least they SHOULD be. But I guess the way it's portrayed in the media these days it might aswell be the same. Hillary vs Trump or Batman vs Superman; It's all a silly fightt bewtween made up characters.
But in reality politics affect everyone. It might not matter what establishment puppet gets to smile for the cameras next year, but it matters if you go to a pointless war, bomb thousands of civilians or support a brutal regime. (I'm speaking of American politics, because chances are that's where you're from - In my own country different things are topical and you'll find important issues anywhere)

As for pop culture being something to "distract everyone from the drabness of life"; Yes. That's exactly what it is, and that's fine. Everyone needs to get their mind off things sometimes and relax. Don't you have that? I bet you do. It might be something very differnt for you, but that's no reason to look down on others.

I think politics are an important part of our society I just don't want to get into these pointless feuds about them. I haven't met a lot of people who can put passion aside and just have a conversation about it and I just have to not engage in that.

I'm not looking down on people who like pop culture. Its not my thing and it feels like a waste of time because it doesn't further yourself or your community. Its just how I feel. I'm entitled to that. I do have my own things but I do like to focus on things that further myself and things around me. Introspection and community and all that. I just don't understand the appeal is all. I'm not 100% oblivious to celebrity culture. Its just not something I actively seek out.

I also like people you can have discussions with without it getting too heated or hostile, but there's plenty such people out there, if you keep looking.

I wouldn't say pop culture doesen't further the community. As the name sais: It's culture. It's a framework around which people socialise and have common things to talk about. Sometimes that leads to deeper conversations about ethics and morality, and sometimes it's just fun and makes people happy. There's value in that too.
But it's of course fine if you don't engage in it; It's not so much my thing either.

True. I see what you're saying. I think negative life experiences have left me a little jaded and maybe too serious. I find it trivial but that does have value. I can appreciate that. :P

Wow, I'm surprised to see such a reflective and honest reply. You don't get that often on the internet. Thank you :)
I'm sorry for your negative experiences. I hope you still have ways to zone out and have fun.

People talking about sports piss me off more than either of those. Pop culture is just entertainment, and politics is kind of the same thing.

Even though I'm not an athlete and it doesn't really interest me I can sort of see the appeal. To some degree it is very amazing what some athletes can do and I can appreciate that. On the other hand sometimes its just vanity and pride and I can understand how you feel on that front lol

At your age, figuring out what does interest you is whats important. Don't worry if it's not something on cable tv.
