Is it normal that i constantly worry about the kind of music i listen to?

I mostly just listen to country music, but I always worry about what people will think of me if they knew that I just listen to one genre. I always say to myself, “it's not normal to just listen to one genre/ this artist/band is too popular, why are you listening to them?" or things like that. My friends listen to metalcore bands like Motionless in White, and I'm not really into that kind of music. They think they are better than everyone else because they listen to underrated bands. Also, I always compare myself to other people. For example, if someone likes a really popular artist/band, I think to myself, “at least i dont listen to that!" I try to be open minded about other genres, and I want to listen to other genres, but I don't know where to start. Anyway, is it normal to constantly worry about what music I listen to?

It's music. It's not supposed to put standards on someone's head.
Listen to what you like and don't apologise for it.

It's okay to like what you like. Many people like country music. I don't listen to it much but I like some of Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert's songs. I'm just not into mainstream stuff, but to each their own.

I am the same, it's because theres a group of music snobs who judged people by their music choice. Which just annoys me I mean i'm listening to it not you!

    Hiya,

Nobody with any sense would judge you on what music you like. I love older folk, rock & blues. I've had tons of comments about it, asking why I liked it when there's decent stuff about I could listen to, that it was so bad a burglar would leave it behind, etc. (this happened!) I was thought of as a bit strange, but nobody stopped talking to me over it.

Listening to music's meant to be fun, not something to worry about :) Listen to what you like and don't let anyone judge you.

Each individual has their own tastes there's nothing to it. Don't worry bout what others will think. If country is what makes you happy then so be it.

Don't worry about what other people think. If that's the kind of music you like and it makes you happy then listen to it. Being that I'm black, other black people used to talk down to me for not liking rap music, but instead liking music like country, rock, acoustic, etc. I hated it, but that never stopped me from rolling the window down, blasting my favorite song up, and singing to it as loud as I can. Don't worry about what they think. Their opinion should mean nothing to you.

What's wrong with listening to popular artists? Seriously, I'm tired of this shit.

I think that it is normal to worry about what people think about you.

I have learned, throughout the course of this life, that people often put others down to make themselves feel like they are somehow better or distinguished from all the rest. Even those that claim to be tolerant and non-judgemental have a tendency to be complete assholes to people for not doing it their way.

Not constantly, but a moderate worry is understandable. But you do listen to country, which can put more pressure on your music preferences. Everyone thinks country music is funny because of the stereotypes associated with it. That's probably why they tried to make country "cooler" with Taylor Swift. Just be yourself and listen to whatever makes you feel like you. Maybe your friends' bands are underrated for a reason, i don't know....
