Dogs (all canines actually, so wolves, coyotes etc..) have a different type of Penis than humans and other primates do. They have a "sheath" type foreskin that is much thicker and covers the entire penis completely; you can pull this slightly hairy sheath-skin back and there's a reddish (color varies by breed and individually) thin and always hard penis underneath.
This slim red penis seen when pulling the foreskin back is equivalent to a human man's "soft/flaccid" state when they aren't aroused/horny. During sex the female will get bored quick (as opposed to the dreaded "quick-shot" "premature" etc.. human MALE) and try to leave too soon. So male dogs have evolved this knot to "tie" themselves to the girl (this is why it only swells up once they are absolutely fully aroused/hard as it is supposed to get them "stuck" INSIDE the female so they can't leave.) Once the knot is swelled the dog will stop humping after a bit and sit there, at this point he will CONSTANTLY ejaculate a very large amount of semen into the female. After that even the male will likely be "done" and attempt to leave, sometimes turning backwards to male and female are "butt to butt", eventually after the knotted ejaculation ends (it can be 5 minutes, 15 minutes, up to a crazy 45 minutes!!) the dog knot softens and the female "untenses" allowing the penis to slowly slide back out. Then they go their separate ways.
