Is it normal that i can't tolerate people with mild mental disabilities?

It's the darnedest thing, really, because I really try. In the end, people I've known with Asperger's Syndrome or Autism just drive me up the wall.

I realize their issues, I realize they can't connect...but sorry. They repeatedly piss me off and I choose to avoid them like the plague.

I was actually good friends with a girl of the Asperger's fame, but in the end she just enjoyed being a one-upper on the "how fucked up I was last night" front.

I know I'm not the only one. My bet's on normal, and we are all going to hell! :D

I sort of feel the same. I'm cool when it comes to people with different disabilities that behave like "normal" people , but I do find people with greater disabilities very disturbing. I'm not proud of it, but that's the way I feel.

I have Aspergers, and cannot stand other people with the condition.

i think only a very naive sheltered individual would avoid anyone with a disability .. i'm sure these "actual human beings" that most on this post are referring to as "they" did not ask for their disability let alone to be treated or talked about as if theyr'e not even of the same species as you are

Why would I have a problem with them? They're just people just like me you or anyone else. My ex is involved with the disability rights movement, his brother has CP. On a few occasions they've worked with one of the movement's big photographers and he said everyone has a disability. For the most part I agree. Everyone has problems, everyone has something preventing them from being all they can be. Some people's disabilities are just more noticeable than others.

I've had friends who are autistic, friends with low cognitive function; I used to hang out with a deaf girl in day camp. I see no difference between people like that and myself except that they have overcome challenges in their lives that I've never had to face.

Honestly the only time I've ever had a problem with someone with a disability is because she was constantly trying to have sex with me and I just wasn't feeling it. XD

One of my best friends swears up and down that he's got a mild case of Asperger's, but I'm inclined not to believe him! He doesn't seem to be socially awkward at all.

I was friends with a guy in college who was autistic, and I actually felt like I connected better with him, than I have with any other person who doesn't have any mental disabilities.

Some of these people, especially Autistic individuals and people suffering from Asperger's, can be quite fascinating. Their minds work in such a different way, that they see things, or think things that sometimes I would never realize!

I find it kind of interesting. I had a colleague with severe Asperger's and I had very interesting conversations with him. You just have to realise that you need to adapt, rather than them.

Normally I'm very understanding. I have friends with depression, ADHD, anxiety, OCD, etc. My exception is this one girl with bi-polar disorder. Sometimes she acts like mature adult and sometimes she just acts so annoying. The 180 really pisses me off. I tell myself it's not her fault and I should be understanding. But, I can't help getting REALLY frustrated whenever she does the 180. So yeah, you're not alone. But I don't believe in hell so HA!

I do think people like us should go on avoiding. If we interact we might say something bad and do some damage. I'd feel pretty guilty about that.

Why are you hanging around so many of them? Do they ride your bus? I can go 6 months without seeing one of them.

They seem to be quite common on the short bus for some reason... I don't get it.

    • You'd be surprised...all kinds of them wonder campuses of both private and public universities, and are within your department, or placed in your freshmen orientation group that you are in charge of. In my experience, on my campus, avoiding them 100% of the time is quite nearly impossible.

Either I am not looking hard enough, or I went to the wrong University for that.

What do you do around those you have serious mental disabilities?

    • Beat the shit out of them.

No, but seriously, I make light conversation, and find the quickest way out of it. I'm no bully!

I wouldn't be very suprised if some of the posters of these disrespectful comments were within the autistic spectrum .. One indicator of aspergers after all is a clear lack of empathy !
