Is it normal that i am on day 12 of my period after starting birth control?

I started a new birth control pill this month (on day one of my period) and I still have my period, 12 days later. It is a rather light flow. I have been on birth control before and this has never happened. I am on birth control to regulate my menstrual cycle since I was getting my period twice a month for a week.

    Speak to your doctor.

Hard to say without knowing your current and previous doses. Changing pill strengths can throw you off some, but its always best to call your doc (I'm just some random dude on the Internet).

Heheh, thanks. I actually do disease/condition and treatment assessment for a living and women's health is one of my specialties. But I'm not a doc and usually encourage folks to talk to one.

I had a friend bleed for 90 days with one of those arm implants. She became ill and anaemic. Do to the doctor. Find a new contraceptive.

It can take a few months for things to regulate. It sucks. My first one, I let go for six months - I'd bleed in the middle of the hormone pills all the time.

You may need a higher dose or a different type, but I think generally, you'd be told to give it a few months to settle.

    Good luck :/

  • It doesn't hurt to ask a professional but I am pretty sure this is normal. I tried a birth control, Seasonique, that gives you only 4 periods a year. I bled for 4 months straight. So of course I stopped that one and switched to another. Give your body time to adjust but if you continue to have your period ask a professional.
