Is it normal that i actually listened to and enjoyed a justin bieber album?

One day I was bored on the Internet, and out of sheer curiosity, I decided to listen to Justin Bieber's "My World 2.0" album on YouTube. I just thought it would be an unusual way to waste time; something different for a laugh. After all, Justin Bieber is despised all over the Internet and it's now become "cool" to automatically hate his music, so I thought I'd be a bit rebellious and and listen to the album just to see what all the fuss is about.

And I can't believe I'm saying this, but I actually enjoyed listening to the album. I usually hate modern pop music (especially the music from Glee, which drives me nuts), but for some reason I found myself listening to the entire 37 minutes. I certainly wouldn't call it a good album (because let's face it, it's Justin Bieber), but nor would I call it a bad album either. It's certainly a lot better than any album by Nicki Minaj or an angry, potty-mouthed gangsta rap group. Also, the album had a childlike innocence to it, which made it somewhat pleasant. I opened my mind, stepped into the shoes of the album's target audience, and took it all in, and to be honest, I was surprised. It really wasn't that bad.

Also, please don't instantly judge me or my taste in music. Music is my passion and I actually have a very diverse taste in music, and I am a professional progressive rock keyboardist to go along with that. Music is my life, and I listened to the album as a curious experience, not for entertainment purposes. Usually I would steer clear from teen pop because I really hate it (as well as rap music and a few other genres), but it felt strangely satisfying to venture out of my comfort zone and listen to something I'd never normally listen to just for the hell of it.

  • A lot of people seem to have missed the point of this post entirely.

I DID NOT BECOME A FAN OF JUSTIN BIEBER.

Read those words, for the love of God. Read them.

I just enjoyed the album for that one single play.

    END OF STORY!

Normal. If you enjoyed listening to it, then you shouldn't worry about what others think.

Sure it's normal. I do that often. I discovered rap and dubstep and trance and pre-90s punk and lots of other music I like that way. Justin Bieber's music is deliberately mild and inoffensive, and thus it's difficult to deeply hate it unless you hate things purely for being mild and inoffensive.

Btw, you don't have to guard against people judging you for liking Justin Bieber here. We don't have those kind of trolls. Listen to what you want, no-one cares. Prog musicians are supposed to be open-minded to an array of influences anyway, right? :P

Given that Justin Bieber is sort of the poster boy for mainstream music and his songs often top the charts, I think it's fairly obvious that a lot of people are buying his music. I would imagine that most of them buy it because they enjoy it. So, I think it's pretty common to like him. I'm not sure why it's so common and why he's so popular, though. Why do you like him?

And I doubt the overcompensating is going to stop people from judging your taste in music. Does it *really* matter? Listen to whatever crap you want to listen to.

    • I thoroughly detest Justin Bieber as a person and it's unlikely that I'll ever listen to his music again. I didn't LIKE the album, that's not what I was trying to say. But, I enjoyed the rebelliousness of actually listening to something that everyone hates and making up my own mind. Because there are literally millions of people who jump on the anti-Bieber bandwagon who don't have the balls to give his music a go first before deciding that it sucks.

And don't call me a hipster either, I don't usually do hipster-ish things like this.

Well, I only had your post to go off, and it sounded like you liked the album. You should be clearer next time. Like I said, he tops the charts, so I don't see Bieber love as being uncommon in the slightest. He seems to have decent amounts of people who love him, people who detest him, and people who are completely indifferent. So I don't think there's a "hipster" reaction.

And I didn't call you a hipster. Where did I say that?:S If anything, I was saying the opposite. I said liking him was mainstream!

Like I said, it doesn't matter. I like (and listen to) all sorts of crap. Despite that, the music I listen to most and which I love most is made by artists who are considered good. I don't listen to something because it's good, though, I listen to it because of the way it makes me feel. So I really don't care about having "good" or "bad" taste. Stop overreacting! It's really no big deal.

  • Today I listen to an album called "Tonight you look like a spider" by David Yow of Jesus Lizard/Scratch Acid non fame, it was odd. Not what I was expecting at all really but pretty rad.

Justin Bieber isn't very good because his songs don't sound good.

And that's really all I have to say about that.

It's normal I think. It's like this Miley Cyrus song I've listened to and came to like. I think that many people think that Bieber's music is just for teenagers and children and they don't tak e the time to listen so as to have a fair judgement.

I don't think it's that unusual. I love album rock and even used to work at a Classic Rock station in Jackson, Mississippi before I moved to this gaudy corner of Hell known as Las Vegas. There's a bunch of crap I didn't like and probably will never like. I think music is a lot like art in that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

I like some of his songs. They sound good when you sing it, and they're fun for Karaoke. :)

Normal, it's popular for a reason.

I've listened to some of his music, it's alright, but not something I'd make a point of listening to or buying. I'm more Michael Jackson, Beatles, Elvis etc. but I wouldn't hate you if you did find the album decent. Honestly, I don't understand how people can call all his music awful when they haven't even listed to some of the newer things (other than the infamous 'Baby').
