Is it normal that google maps satellite has caused me to hate the human race?

With the Google maps satellite, one can see how humans have turned vast stretches of once pristine, beautiful, healthy wilderness into manicured, geometrically conspicuous agricultural land. I call this "the plague".

The plague engulfs almost all of Europe from head to toe, with the exception of Scandinavia and Russia (if Russia is considered to be part of Europe).

Canada, thankfully, has alot of wild land left (though much of it is harsh tundra in the far north), but the plague is also firmly established, and seems poised to spread if overpopulation and climate change drive it to do so.

The United States has been deeply affected by the plague, especially in the mid-west. There is plenty of wild land left, but I fear for it's future.

It's revolting.

This is truly a difficult topic: On one hand it is said not to change the earth as it has taken millions of years to shape it into this perfect ecosystem at mass.
On the other hand the earth is changing due to astrological changes, magnetic field alterations (pole reverse), natural gas emissions etc. At any point in time an asteroid could hit as random as a jackpot lottery and the earth could be instantly destroyed.
In my opinion, of course we have a duty to protect our home. Unfortunately it is human nature to change/control things for personal gain - we rarely collectively fight for a cause unless we are in a collective crisis.
I personally make a very important point to preserve the earth I love (all of it) - and make it better by doing things like planting trees etc. As humans become more civilized their commitment to sustainability will increase. In Canada for every tree you cut down for your business you must plant. I have to believe that humans will come together to protect the planet, hopefully not too late.
I do not hate anyone for doing this, that is wasted energy. Instead I try to display a good example to others and educate myself.

You're definitely not alone. To be honest, I'm very glad too that I'm not alone. Nice to have someone standing by my side on this. I wish more people cared.

It's interesting how much we actually care about the planet, as opposed to all the other species in general. I feel like We love nature, at least most of us do. Where the only thing around here to have such an impact on our planet, but it isn't negative in everyone's opinion. Where so clever, look at the way we all have our say on this topic. I think we can live more sustainable, (and we work towards it) simply because humans are generally quite clever, and we actually care about things. (such as the rights of animals, and the ecosystem)

What's interesting is that many people seem to think we are the plague of the earth... yet NATURE has exterminated more species than we ever had.

Seriously, 99.9% of ALL species that have ever been on the earth were extinct before we ever existed.

This growing trend of hating humans for existing and daring to touch the earth is... rather insane in my opinion.

and as much as some want to say "omg we're *destroying* the earth... in reality the earth will bounce back given time. i mean hell it surved 99.9% of species going extinct after all.

    • The earth cannot "bounce back" until the human plague has been eliminated.

This is the problem with many "earth happy" theories... they assume humans are evil for touching the earth and must be eliminated.

instead of actually studying FACTS they stir the "omg shock" masses with misinformation.

for example... game species. BECAUSE of human intervention we actually have MORE of them now than we did 200 years ago.

but hey why let facts interfere with the doom and gloom drama, right?

But you also have to think of the species that have become extinct, or near extinct also. We have lots lots of rainforest, animals and such because some human beings are greedy, or hunt for ivory, fur etc. Also animal testing still happens (I know people that work for beauty companies) so as a whole humans have not looked after this plant as well as they could have. Landfill, food waste, greed, war to name a few have ravaged large areas of this planet. And the hole in the ozone layer is bigger than the north pole...

        • I was specifically talking about deforestation. That humans have caused unprecedented deforestation is undeniable, and very saddening to me.

            Again misinformation.

You need to learn what is the truth about "deforestation" and what is just political hype used to stir people into hatred.

            • It can clearly be seen on Google maps satellite. Europe was once covered in oak forests. Look at it now. Look at the Western half of Kentucky, as another small example. Look at how much of the Amazon rainforest has been cut down to make coffee farms. Much of New England was once clear cut, it has been able to heal only because the practice has greatly diminished, and because the eastern American forests are particularly quick to regenerate.

I could go on and on. The link you posted refers to responsible logging practices that do not result in deforestation, but are also not universally practiced. Deforestation is real and is occurring today. You cannot deny what can clearly be seen.

This is called "The Revenge of Gaia"(Mother Earth)or Gaia's revenge. The ancient Amazons called the earth Gaia and believed she was a living breathing entity from which all life was nurtured from. It's said that every so many thousands of years when a species becomes too problematic or too destructive for her(Gaia)she cleanses herself. Us (the human race) are nurtured from our earth and when we don't respect her she will cleanse herself, much like we would remove a tick or a parasite from our bodies. This could be in the form of a plague or climate change or some other form of natural disaster. The Greeks also had a god named Gaea (Earth-mother).

Isn't it funny how humans are animals, made of the same stuff as other beings and objects; we developed on Earth and continue to do so, and yet we still think of ourselves as separate from (even in opposition to) nature?

We're so fucking full of ourselves.

There is something distinctly amazing to me about a human knowing it is part of the world around it, and that the way it is living is somewhat disrespectful or negative. It's nice that we don't always think good things about ourselves, we are willing (sometimes more willing) to admit some of our problems, than to notice our good features.

Isn't that exactly what I'm doing? I don't disagree, cognizance is extraordinary. What I don't understand is the arbitrary dialectic between that which is "nature" and that which is "man-made". It's a weird exceptionalism that I don't really get.

Ah I see, Maybe it arises from us being more aware and more able to manipulate our surroundings. I guess It's in our nature. I don't disagree with you either, I feel people tend to forget their root and where where really spawned from sometimes. I feel like people can sometimes still perceive things like this too negatively sometimes, but that's just my opinion.

-Edit- I feel like a lot of what I said here didn't make too much sense. I don't think I was really understanding the concept, or following the topic. I guess what is nature and what is man-made are elementally the same, and maybe it's more our nature to seperate the concepts. Man made things are what have a distinct human craftsmanship to them perhaps, where natural things have not received our manipulation.

So you're the person killing beavers, ants, birds etc., because they shape their area to their comfort?

It is kind of ignorant of you to see us as something seperate from nature. We're as much nature as the other creatures. I can even one up that and suggest we're the most environmentally conscious(spelling) creature.

Plus it can always be more efficient. We can probably improve the earth. I live in the Netherlands and a large part of the country is below sea level and land claimed from the sea. I see there the beauty of human intelligence and engineering. The square land tiles, beauty. But that might be difficult to see for people who can't even see that humans are animals:part of nature;P Hehe, we have a Dutch expression: losing sight of the forest because/through the trees. I would suggest: read/think, cut a bit down on the feeling.

In the bible, deppending on your interpretation, it reads that animals and plants were put on the planet for us and that the planet is made for the expansion of humans. That's my interpretation. Not neccesarily yours, but base on my interpretation, vegans and environmentalists are worked up over nothing. Just saying.

I completely agree. The BEST thing anyone can possibly do is support spreading family planning because DEpopulation is a necessity for the human race to survive. Look up Penti Linkola (I think that's how you spell his name). The second half of his book "Can Life Prevail" is very good. He's a radical "conservationist" or "ecofascist" haha. He's even more radical than me, but he has some really good stuff to say.

You make a good point, but what are you doing to try and fix the issue or not be a part of it? Do u live in a proper house or in the middle of the jungle some where. I think anyone can complain about things but if it truly bothers them try and make a difference or set your self apart and lead by example.
Me personally.. Doesn't bother me. We are the most dangerous predator on this earth, we are doing what comes naturally to us, this doesn't make it right but ... We invented right and wrong.
