Is it normal that former customers expect me to act like act i'm their friend?

I live In a town that's almost a city, and I used to work at the most popular grocery store(I was a cashier). I quit because the mangement was horrible. And their was so many people who when through my till(too many to remember). Two weeks ago I was at the doctor and sitting in the waiting room and former customers (who looked like strangers to me) sat beside me and and eventually started making fun of me because I didn't join in their conversation. They called a rude bitch because I didn't remember them. Every time I go to town their is always at least 10 people who were former customers and expect me to remember them. I really want people to leave me alone because I don't know them. Is this normal?

I work in a very small store where I see the same 50 people every day. The people who see you at the doctor's office or on the bus don't seem to realize that you probably see 500 people every day and they are not the same people today as they were yesterday. People who are your customers are NOT your friends and they should not expect to be.

That was immature of them to get upset and call you a bitch for not remembering them.

I go through the same exact thing. I'm a cashier and it's like being an F list celebrity. Whenever I'm on the bus or walking somewhere to get food someone is always like, "hey, how have you been?" And I refuse to pretend like I recognize them. I just say, "sorry, do I know you?" I'm an asshole . . .

I would never expect you to remember me in your work setting... you see and deal with too many customers
