Is it normal that foreign names make me hungry

Ok so first of all I'd like to say that this is in no way meant to be racist and that I'm not overweight. I work in customer services and come across many clients with foreign names. When I see a Chinese name, it might make me think of a tasty sweet'n sour rice dish for example; with Italian, a nice oregano-flavoured tomato sauce pasta, etc. So is it normal to link foreign names to the cuisines of their country of origin? Terrible stereotyping? A strange case of synesthesia? Pls let me know your thoughts

It reminds you of the type of food their country produces. Maybe you aren't taking in enough calories during the day and things can set your stomach off easily.

I don't really find this that strange at all. It is well known that these sort of associations are used commercially, in packaging, advertising and shops. Supermarket managers know that by playing Spanish music in the background, they have a good chance of shifting more units of Rioja wine. Consciously or not, it just puts people in a certain mood, by planting a suggestion. That's also why romantic-sounding French names are very popular for products like perfume and chocolate. Marketing 101.

    • That's a pretty name :) sounds like a juicy exotic fruit, lol. It reminds me of the Japanese fruit Yuzu. I've tried Yuzu chocolate once - not bad.

I think this post has been misunderstood a bit, though. Not every foreign name has this effect on me. If I hear a common Italian first name like Roberto, it doesn't make think of Spaghetti. I guess they need to be more unusual or have a certain ring. It tends to be last names that I haven't heard before and it helps if I already feel a bit hungry. Not sure how it works exactly...

What food you think about consuming when you hear a black person's name?

    • Black American or African names? I used to have a roommate from Eritrea and she made the most delicious food. Her speciality was a yeasty, spongy pancake filled with stew :)

  • That is just association, everyone associates things with other things, in psychology it's referred to as a learning aid.

Just don't go shouting "noodles!" when you meet some named Mr. Lee. =P
