Is it normal that female clothing is so sexualized?

As a man I have to admit that female clothing (especially starting from the age of teenage girls) is so sexualized. Literally every piece of clothing developed for girls and women is meant to draw attention and be provocative in nature. Underwear, bras, panties, lingerie, bikinis all show revealing amounts of skin. Shirts and tops that are tight and often go up to the armpits or shoulders, and leave lots of open space in the front to show off cleavage, or that don't go down all the way in order to show off a little skin underneath the belly button. Pants and shorts that are very tight, or so short that they practically come up to the ass and crotch. The list is endless: like dresses, skirts, sweatpants, hoodies, jackets, shoes, heels, boots. All of which is revealing and accentuates key body parts such as breasts, buttocks, legs, hips, waist, and back. I know this is an entire industry but I feel that this kind of style of female clothing objectifies them. I think it says something that when women don't necessarily want to come off as walking billboards of sex and pleasure, they are basically forced to wear men's clothes.

The thing is, for the human race to survive chicks have got to make guy's dicks hard, dressing like a slut helps.

I'm a woman and yes it is annoying trying to find clothes that fit without being as you described.

It's not normal or consistent with human beings as the thinking reasoning individuals we are. It's an unhealthy insect hive mentality that places women in the role of breeding stock, walking uteruses to be used. Women's job by this view is to be sexy and provocative and a desirable sex partner. It's a sick twisted and degrading system.

Sexualized clothing quickly becomes ineffective. The more sexualized it gets, the more men will interpret it as "average" in the long run. This pattern of attraction self-adjusts. Women wear clothes to impress other women anyway.

Especially so when the woman is attracted to other women.

Maybe it's because I am from a Capitalist country so this may well fly over some of your heads but here in the US... it's probably the consumer's fault.

Businesses sell what the majority of their target demographic is going to buy. That said, the demographic of women who want to buy clothes that are in no way feminine really isn't a huge one and for the women out there that WANT those clothes, the selection is limited which SUCKS but once again, they aren't a major demographic.

In addition to this, I don't really see what is wrong with clothing that doesn't completely hide feminine physical characteristics. It is not THAT hard to find modest clothing, I only have a handful of shirts that actually SHOW cleavage, the rest of them were picked partially because they don't and clothes shopping isn't all that difficult for me.

    • You keep on disapearing for long periods of time and then popping back. I feel like a mentally abused kid who's father pretends to go get milk during Christmas only never to come back until Christmas next year to do it again. :'(

If the lingerie wasn't so sexy then there would have to be a lot of lingerie and such made for men specific. (For us crossdressers).

I can see women wanting to have fun and be sexy sometimes but ya it's pretty creepy how society sexualizes women, clothing, makeup, in magazines, in movies, you name it. Men are portrayed in many ways but women almost always as sex objects. It's sad and it's creepy.

Ok, can I first say that sometimes women/girls want to feel like they look good, independently of trying to attract attention? Maybe some psychologist person would say that's impossible, the only reason I could possibly care about my appearance is that I want to be impregnated. A lot of people who get involved in this type of debate believe that, but I disagree.

I don't understand the clothing industry. I wear a certain style of clothing regardless of what is in style. Usually pretty fitted, but never very revealing. I often have to search hard to find things I like out of all the trendy crap. I have no idea if girls who follow the trends actually feel good about doing so. Maybe they like it, maybe it's all they could find or afford.

You know those programs that "invent" random recipes by taking not-very-useful data about existing recipes, and mashing ingredients together? That's how clothes seem to be designed. It's not about making nice clothes, it's about jamming 5 tacky trends into 1 unfortunate shirt. And a lot of the "trendy" clothes I've seen have reasonable necklines or are even very wide-fitting. It's not that women's clothes are all slutty, it's just that they're mostly very ugly.

I thought I was the only one being driven insane. Clothes are so disgusting and slutty no it's unbelievable.

I can't wear v-necks or booty shorts because it makes me feel like I'm showing off my body to get attention and I'm insecure about my body tbh. I recently started buying clothes from the 'men's' section and found that they have much better clothes. I got plaid that didn't have ugly lace patterns everywhere and a cute t shirt that wasn't saying '#selfie' or 'I'm a white skank Starbucks'. I find most women's clothing to be too revealing for my taste and also ugly. They have just the worst looking patterns and ugh. Fashion is literal trash.

I can agree that tons of girls wear clothing that gives a sexy sort of ambiance. What I would like to know is how many of these girls wear it WILLINGLY or wear it JUST because it's "in style".

        Mighty Aphrodite?!?!

My favorite line from the movie- "See, as the mainspring goes back and forth, the bishop keeps fucking her in the ass. It's a genuine antique and it keeps perfect time."

        :)

  • Yeah, but why? I think you see this happening and just assume it's some sort of plan behind the scenes to make women wear this type of thing when the reality is that because more and more women have opted for these types of clothing, those typse of clothing get produced more and more.

Hell, Yoga pants wasn't used as much a few years ago and then BOOM, they're used everywhere, not because female jeans were taken away but because women chose to wear them more and more.

I disagree that female clothing are always sexualized to the point that there aren't clothing choices out there that aren't defining some sort of sexual aspect of a woman's body although I will admit there's more female sexualized clothing than there are for men.

You can find all the things you listed that aren't sexualized, it's wether or not they're chosen as much by women.

This isn't something thrown on to women against their will, this is just the case of supply and demand. Women have opted for these types of clothing over the clothing that isn't sexualized and so more and more sexualized clothing are produced.

Don't blame other people for the choices women have made as a market to cater to. There are other options out there and when a woman wears these types of clothing it's because she chose to out of all the other options, nothing more.

"it's some sort of plan behind the scenes to make women wear this type of thing"

Well in ladies fashion, that IS mostly true. It is extremely difficult to find low to moderately priced ladies clothing free from trendy flair. The majority of women's clothing is not what women 'demand' but what designers, manufacturers and buyers want to push this season.

Mens departments ALWAYS carry the basics. Men can walk in any regular department store and buy a normal t shirt, normal pants and anything else. Trendy items are available but not the bulk of the selection. And they are sized in actual measurements while ladies clothes are not. An 8 or a medium is whatever the company decides.

Womens departments offer mostly trendy items and even the frumpy section is still influenced by the current trend. Prints and cuts still reign even in the conservative clothing. Someone decided earlier this year that southwest patterns were cool so now it is a bitch to find normal shirts or pants without that print. It can be quite hard to find a pair of yoga pants (in low to mid price) that doesn't have words over the butt. Sure, you can find a larger or more conservative shirt but it usually has a print, color or other undesireable trendy element to it. A lot of women are wearing the lesser of the evils they have to choose from. Guys might think she chose pants that say 'juicy' or whatever but most likely she picked what she could tolerate from the selection available. The other pants said 'sexy' or any number of stupid sayings. I mean, how do you choose when all you want is a damn pair of stretch pants but they ALL say shit on the back? Whenever I need clothes I end up going to several stores, and often coming up empty, whereas my husband can find what he needs in one or 2 places. I almost always end up sacrificing and picking stuff I don't really like because of being limited to what is for sale.

That said, I disagree with OP in that I think he is looking at all form-fitting clothing as sexualized. It's not. It just...fucking...fits. Nobody says anything when a guy wears clothes tailored for him or that fits his body. I prefer fitted over baggy and me wearing a normal fitted tee or tank or jeans or yoga pants is for nothing other than my personal comfort. Maybe he has a personal issue with projection or objectification and is trying to place blame elsewhere.

      • When I say supply and demand I'm not meaning women literally "demand" these types of clothing, I'm saying they opt for these types of clothing and so those types of clothing get produced more.

Yes, men's departments always carry the basics because men have always gone for the basics, so the basics are going to be sold more.

Well if the problem is that clothing is too sexualized for women but women aren't going to pick certain clothing because of a few words on the non-sexualized clothing then it's not really a problem then, is it? Maybe this is there are more plain shirts for guys because men will just put on any old shirt regardless of what's on the shirt, which means putting time in to the production of putting stuff on the shirt is a waste of production time.

I don't know what you're talking about with the pants issue. I've never seen women's pants saying stuff on the back. Not saying they don't exist, just hinting that there's enough variety that it's not something someone would be pushed in to having.

Well I don't know, the women I've known who don't like tight clothing have always been able to find the clothes they want with ease such as jeans and shirts. I might go around the shops in my neighborhood to see if it's the case.

I've also had to make these sacrifices. For example, I don't like shirts with words on them either but sometimes they were the only ones there and I've had to wear them.

Another thing I'd have to point out is why not buy from the male section if this is an issue? If there is reason enough for this change and many women feel the same then by ignoring what's on the women's clothing options and buying stuff on the male isles would end up being noted and then you'd end up getting the same product for women.

You say nobody says anything about a man wearing clothes that fits him...Skinny jeans. That is all. Lol.

In all seriousness, I do think women opt for the more tight clothing options to define certain parts of their bodies. Not all women obviously but a good sum of them. Their choice so I'm not saying they can't. It's just that despite seeing options for non tight pants and stuff, if a woman is average to decent build, they tend to opt for tight clothing. Lol.

I prefer fitted over baggy myself but it's a bitch to try and find some. I guess this is the male equivilent of this topic. Whenever I look for jeans they're either too baggy or too thin. I just want some damn jeans that fit my legs without tons of folds and shit. :(

I wouldn't call my preference in clothes 'tight', just fitted. Guys probably see it as tight but it's moreso simply clothes that fit. I think that is what is getting lost in the conversation here.

I do get some things from the mens department but the problem there is the cuts are 'off'. Mens tank tops have differently made arm holes that tend to show too much on the side for my liking. Mens tees are either too baggy or if I try a small size there just isn't room in the chest because mens shirts aren't made with titties in mind. If you look at a womans tee it has an hourglass shape to it. Mens obviously do not. The crotch of mens pants is way longer. I shop every department, I have even bought large childrens tees before, but it is pretty rare to find things that fit right in other departments.

But anyway, fashion sucks. I wish there was a store that just sold basics. Normal colors and cuts and no weird random flair like words or tiny pockets. I actually saw a business pitch that idea on a tv show that did exactly that but it was for men.

          • Maybe. As a guy when I see clothes that fit me I don't think of clothes that are always touching my skin and has a little bit of baggyness to it, so maybe.

I think the main way this would be changed would be if more and more women decided to get the types of clothing you described, maybe even from online gaming.

One thing I have to agree with is guy's crotch areas, even for me that's annoying, it looks terrible. Obviously there's need for some room but they just over do it so much with the space needed for our parts. Aha.
