Is it normal that darkness caused hallucinations for me in my childhood?

When I was about four to six, sleeping in the dark was traumatising. I'd see my mum's face change and distort into something horrendous. Even coats could "morph" into something.

One day it just stopped - was it an overreactive imagination or something? Is this what children mean when they claim to be fearful of the dark?

Above all, is it normal for kids four to six?

  • I think darkness has that effect on some people. Your sight has less external stimulation to focus on so your brain kind of starts filling in the gaps. This is why sensory deprivation tanks cause people to go on inward journeys and begin to see and hear things that are all in their heads.

  • I don't know the answer but I've always had that happen too but it never went away for me.

Demons, perhaps? I recently saw something otherworldly materialise in the darkness of my room, a couple of days back. Needless to say, I've been sleeping with the lights on.
