Is it normal that at night while i try to sleep i have horrible thoughts

When I try to sleep at night I toss and turn and my head is full of the most absurd thoughts, like the meat being peeled off my finger. Mostly, though, I obsess over past situations that were awful and sad and embarrassing to the point that I hate myself. In the morning, however, I'm fine for the most part. Last night being like a bad dream. Easily forgotten until It's time for bed again. I've taken up drinking before sleepy time to help. This isn't normal, is it?

Meat pulled off your finger sounds disturbing but I always think about the most embarrassing moments in my life too so it's normal. Most people do

It's not regular but it's normal. After a bad break-up last year I have a hard time sleeping because I replay it constantly in my head. The hurt, my fears, my anger, and my feelings aren't all resolved. I can't sleep unless I tire myself out, have a long day or take anxiety medicine which I have. You might too it's extremely common and can worsen if untreated. It stopped for a while but lately it's come back major. I just want it to stop but I know it won't until I deal with everything. But I wish you wonderful nights of sleep & hopefully we both can get in contact with Mr. Sandman because he's been doing some serious slacking. ;)

The more deprived of sleep I am the more disturbing my thoughts are upon laying down. If you don't want to drink to cloud such thoughts, try going to sleep when your mind is close to consciousness.

  • It's not exactly typical.

I've had my own troubles with sleep, since I was a kid, and have also experienced most of the things you've indicated happening to you. Because of this, I've asked a lot of people (200+, I'm guessing) about their sleeping habits. Everyone appears to enjoy talking about it too, it's great conversation, so I keep asking. I've also read hordes of material about the processes of sleep.

With that, my perception is that most of it is "normal" but maybe not all of it is common; the finger thing is not that common; the obsessing over past events and experiences is very common; to the point you hate yourself not as common. In the morning you feel somewhat rested, despite not having a sound sleep, that's pretty common and people can adapt to functioning normally on depraved sleep, it's just that they might never feel optimal again until they sleep soundly through a night. Drinking to help bliss yourself out enough to accept sleep is common too. You see, all of this stuff does happen to people, just maybe not loads of people. That's how I see it.

I believe you could overcome it, even if it's difficult to do. :)

Are you a psychologist? It seems you have enough information to write a book. Send me a copy if you do!

Sometimes I think about horrible things. That's why I sleep with the TV on.

Thanks everyone! I have cut down on drinking and have started to get up really early in the mornings- like 5:30/6:00am
The people on this site seem really sincere. I'll think of some other terrible secret to share soon
