Is it normal strangers are “extra” friendly to us – an interracial couple?

My girlfriend is black; I’m a white guy. I’ve noticed that, no matter where we are, many strangers seem to go out of their way to be super-friendly to us. We’ve been traveling, acting like tourists and taking pictures of each other and can’t count how many times people have come up and offered to take a picture of us together with our camera. Or another couple will say something like “You look like a nice couple, would you take a picture of us?” Someone will come up to us and say we’re a cute couple or that we look so happy together. An older black woman walked past our table in a restaurant once, looked at my gf and said, “You go girl.” Lots of other stuff, but you should have the picture. I’m not complaining about people being nice; we need more of that these days. But, sometimes it almost seems like we’re being patronized for some reason. We’re a 30-something couple in the Northeast US, but these things have happened throughout the Western Hemisphere.

MIXED children are beautiful because they are the best of both worlds! Usually (100 percenters I call them are just jealous that they are just one race and feel not special) I am a Dominican, french and spaniard model and all races find me super sexy and exotic and I date outside my races perferably especially white men. Im happy i'm mixed thanks mom and dad for the amazing modeling career! :p

I guess it is a bit of a novelty for the onlookers - I wouldn't take it too personally.. Good luck too.. Interracial couples are awesome..:)

Consider whether your black g/f is pretty. Usually people behave that way if the woman is attractive. understand?

Several friends of mine have said to me that they think she's hot and guys of all races that she works with are always hitting on her; so I'd say most people think she's quite attractive. She's also very outgoing and cheerful in her demeanor with everyone. Maybe it's just the positive energy (I'd like to think that more than something as superficial as skin color). Thanks.

I understand. She's pretty, sexy and vivacious, just the kind of girl to prompt attention to you as a couple. Were she alone she'd be more difficult to approach, but, as a member of the pair with you, folks can more easily pay her the compliments she deserves. You must be so proud of her! Please give her my best regards. I'd enjoy hearing more about her and your love.

I really don't see how race is such an issue anymore. It makes me sad. We're all human and practically the same. We should all be treated equally. Anyway, I had to rant about that. And those people were probably paying y'all extra attention because y'all are a genuinely happy couple. Genuine happiness is easily distinguished from fake happiness. And, since so many relationships are failing, it's really good to see a happy couple. It honestly is heartwarming.

You and Juli are right. We could have a biracial kid who ends up being President of the United States. That would never happen though. Oh, wait, it already did.

its just that biraccial kids are made fun of sooo much...and they dont feel like they belong anywhere. PLUS there is racism within the black community of the lighter skinned and darker skinned and its just horrible...i wouldnt want to bring a kid into that. and im against globilisation, or making everyone the same...there wont be peace that way.
maybe nowadays all races are starting to be the same, especiallly in america. where i come from races are all very different and you dont combine them because youd have nothing in common...

  • Well, it's very odd to see an interracial couple. It's a good thing, and I'm sure it can be uncomfortable or annoying, but a lot of people, not just Caucasians, don't exactly open their hearts to those of other races. If you get what I mean.

The things you said happen to any couple...except for maybe the black woman thing but hell, don't let it all go to your head. It seems like any couple is always super friendly to another couple. Happened to my bf and I all the time...but then again I'm white and he's puerto rican. oh dear maybe the same thing is going on! Seriously though, I'm sure people aren't thinking "oh look at that nice oreo couple, let's ask them to take a picture." Come on now.

Thanks. I hope people aren't thinking anything about what a nice oreo couple we are. Thing is, I've been out with women of all different shapes and colors and never noticed as much attention as this. That's why I put the question out there.

Well I guess they find you approachable because they don't feel like you will judge them. They see you as more tolerant and accepting because of your circumstance.

I used to be extra-friendly to blacks, other non-whites, and interracial couples too. It's because of all the white guilt beat into white people from the very beginning. Today I understand the messed up state of mind I was in. People are probably especially friendly to you since black women are objectively the least attractive race of women.

That's really gross though, and horrible for any future children you might have. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Yes Juli, I am quite ashamed to be one person in a partnership of two successful, professional people who are happy, love each other and are confident enough to go after what they want without seeking the approval of anyone. I hope your life improves. Have a nice day. You’re dismissed.
