Is it normal so many people confuse black metal with screamo?

I'm a big fan of black metal and I often hear people refer to it as "screamo"

Yes they both have screaming vocals, but other than that they have nothing in common. I sing and play bass in a death/black metal band and I cannot count how many times I hear people say "that was badass screamo vocals" It's fucking black metal you dumbass emo kid.

Take it as a compliment. Even if they have no idea what they're talking about, at least they said they liked it :P

  • My boyfriend also played bass for a band for a while, I think the exact genre was somewhere between deathcore and death metal. I can't remember the distinction between the two but whichever genre has breakdowns, that's what their band's genre was. Screamo is gay. I cannot, for the life of me understand how anyone who takes even a fraction of interest in all metal type genres of music, could refer to black metal as screamo. Its almost, insulting. There's a big difference to musicians and people who have an ear for these type of things. I'm not the einstein of the genre world but I do know that there is a HUGE difference between Dimmu Borgir and bands like Asking Alexandria, or Alesana, or other bullshit bands.

Not only black metal. A lot of people call anything that has screaming vocals screamo. I think it started with MTV mislabelling various artists with screaming vocals that way, and then everyone started doing so.

Most of these people have never even heard actual screamo.

I had no idea there was such a variety of screaming in music. Now I feel old.

Wow, color me way out of touch. This is the first I've heard of either. Sadly, it seems I was born too early. The one thing I would have liked to do was be a musician in a band. Since I can't play any instrument, and couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, screamo sounds like the solution to my desires. Think anybody would be interested in a very, very old hippie frontman for a screamo band?

    • I don't think you would like what screamo is. It's emo with screaming. Emo's sing about how much their life sucks where as the black metal bands were started by church burners and murderers. I don't condone bands killing each other but I like the music they started. Emo is just horrible though.

  • Black metal sounds nothing like screamo...also...people still listen to screamo? Ewww gross. Thursday was a good band though...kind of.

Most people just hear the abrasive vocals and don't listen closely enough to notice the differences. This is especially true of the people that don't listen to heavier music. It always pisses me off how people call heavier music "noise" and then they don't listen closely enough to hear anything but noise.

I call anything that sounds like that metal, so I would be confusing it on the opposite end.

No Offence meant, but what is the difference? Isn't black/death metal harder?

    • screamo is basically emo with distorted guitars and screaming. Black metal is like death metal but more symphonic and more screaming than the growling that is typical of death metal.

I couldn't think of a more pointless distinction. It's like being able to smell the difference between cowshit and bullshit. Who the fuck cares?
