To start off, I loved Lolita. I read the book and watched the movie and do not find it to be a sick story as there love was mutual. Also, let's not forget that large age gaps in relationships were more socially acceptable back when this story was written.

Now without sounding hypocritical by saying this, it pisses me off when I hear old men talk about how they love 7-12 year old girls and try to romanticize it by saying it's a heartbreaking Lolita-type situation. Lolita's relationship with Humbert was completely mutual and instigated by her. These men probably just creep these young girls from afar and use Lolita as a reference to not sound like perverts!

It's a thin line I'm touching on between these two, but does anyone get what I mean? How do you guys feel about this.

    How can you say, "Lolita's relationship with Humbert was completely mutual and instigated by her"? She was a child, being manipulated by an adult. She was too young to have the faculties to make any such rational decision, even in the time this book was written, which is why is has always been a marginally acceptable book.
    12 year old children cannot, under any circumstances, be thought to be mature enough mentally, to accept their sexual advances. Humbert was was a child molester, period!

    A minor below age of consent does not have the authority before the law to have a relationship, sexual or not with an adult. This law varies by country and state.
