Is it normal people scream when attacked or chased ?

I was sitting watching a movie and had a odd thought , I thought why is it in times of danger poeples instict is to scream I do not understand that ? I mean if your in an abandoned building in the forrest with no poeple but you and a killer and he is sneaking around looking for you or chasing you why do you scream ? if you are attacked and someone slashes at you why would you scream even if you know no one is thier but you and the danger ? I dont understand this fuction ? why do poeple scream so much ? why do poeple scream when thier in pain this too has no real fuction I understand crying but screaming I know this is odd I think to much .

    It doesnt have to just be a situation like what is presented in movies, I scream every time I look in the mirror.

    Anyway I think screaming is a primitive reaction we have, most animals scream to scare\intimidate their enemy, or to cry for help.
    Also psychologically it affects the one trying to kill you no matter how heartless he is, because it will make him know that you're not just an object.

      that is becuase I have no life this is occupying my time and if you read my newest threads you see I am having a krappy life right now but I like watching the responses poeple have . I love yahoo questions and I feel like I am helping wehn I can give advice and I am forced to give it too my freinds boy or girl becuase I am apperently the geniues that knows everything they ask me do thier homework too even if they know the subject better than me . Im the giude of wisdom I dont always want to be but I am everyone theripist weather or not they respect me but they usually treat me like trash ever however alot of them are good to me . however I feel giutly not helping when I see poeple in trouble .

        You seem like a really nice guy\girl, I also can relate to you that you love giving advice to people, but nobody should treat you like trash, you should respect yourself more then expect other people to respect you.

          I think I read something liek that on a personality test once . Its kindve like in those movies were you see that nerd getting beat up to fix everyones problems and do poeple homework until they done helping with issue and than they just kindve completly forget about them . Although I am not that nerdy I just good at human pyschology and though most my life wasnt good at making freinds im pretty loggicol.

    yes and why do they run back into an enclosed area when chased? they should hide outside in the dark, amongst leaves on the ground

    In terms of the pain thing, there have been studies that have shown that vocalisation helps you deal with the pain better. Swearing is even more effective.

      yeas but they still do like in holloween when you come out and chase poeple or when you jump out behind someone nad their reaction is to scream , even though this has no real fuction than to display your shocke and auctully alot dont scream , some of them just sit their and look or jump backward ( still a more reasoanlbe reaction )

    Most animals make a noise when threatened, either to warn other animals or to request help (or both). Chimpanzees are noisiest when excited/threatened. It's probably a human instinct we can't control, like blinking when something flies near your eye.

      That is why you have eyelashes. You blink to keep particals and dust out of your eye. Its to protect your eye from dirt and infection also vuruses and germs. That is a useful fuction.
