Is it normal people say don't flatter yourself and it angers me?

Not just directed at me but other people. My friend and I were at a restaurant today and my friend looks 18, she honestly has no wrinkles or creases on her face. Even 18 years olds have creases somewhere, she has none and it's kinda creepy but anyway, she also has a very cute baby face, a young looking build as she's thin and only 5'0. She has a very young voice too but sounds mature in how she talks. Everyone thinks she's lying when we try to go get drinks, they won't believe she's 31 and she's older than me. I get annoyed with that because I'm in my 20s and she looks younger than me but such is life, eh?

Anyway, the waitress seemed okay at first until she asked for not my ID but my friends ID even though I also ordered an alcoholic drink. Again, that's sad because I'm closer to 21 than her but whatever. My friend rummaged through her bag. I said to my friend while the waitress was there, "haha you're going to have to do this until you're 40" and my friend said, "yeah, my mom said she had to until age 50 so I can see that happening".

My friend finally got out her ID and the woman looked at it and gave it back and said "don't flatter yourself" and we both laughed and she said, "no seriously, don't" and walked away with a cold look. She actually sounded like a total b*tch.

IIN? It GOT me annoyed too because I hate people like that and my friend is my life.

That silly woman sounds jealous and insecure. What happened to waiters/waitresses being respectful towards diners? I sincerely hope that she didn't tamper with your friend's food.

Sounds like jealousy, the waitress was probably a little bitter because your buddy looked younger than her. She wasn't flattering herself, the waitress was just jealous (and not able to hide that at all).

It's weird that she didn't card both of you. Most places card everyone at the table.

And you're friend should probably expect it and have her ID ready. Clearly she likes the attention and that was what the waitress was feeding off of. You were likely one of many annoying people she had to deal with that day. While she probably should have kept her mouth shut and been polite, we all have bad days and sometimes it's really hard to keep quite.

Your post has nothing to do with the phrase itself and is more about the behavior of the waitress.

You're acting like 18 years old is 45.
Even 18 yr olds have that somewhere?
I disagree. 18 Is still like a child.
    just saying.

You see, whereas you were saying she'd be there forever because of your friend, your friend said she'd be there because that's just her life, which was insulting to her. The waitress simply retaliated against what your friend said. I'm sure she didn't mean to be insulting, but it definitely came out that way.
