Is it normal parents let my daughter smoke?

I arranged for my nine-year-old to go and stay with her grandparents for a month during the summer holidays, and when I go to pick her up, I find that they have taught her to smoke, and that she has been puffing her way through fifteen or so ultralights a day for the past week. Her hair and clothes stank of fags, and she even lit one up within a few minutes of my arrival. I watched her take a couple of drags (she actually seemed to be inhaling quite deeply), then took it from her, packed her bags, and left as quickly as possible. I rung up the grandparents that evening and demanded an explanation. They don't see anything wrong in allowing their nine year old granddaughter to smoke. She's been begging me to buy some recently, and I really don't know how to handle it. IIN, and has anyone had a similar experience? What did you do?

It isn't normal. Report them for child endangerment, teach your child the negative health effects of smoking and be sure she knows that you are doing all of this because you love her.

This... This is not normal and your parents seem to be terrible grandparents.

My grandparents let me smoke (& drink) when I was a teenager, started buying them for me & then my mother found out & after some discussion also allowed me to smoke.
Basically they knew I would do it anyway (I was a crafty little cunt) so there was no point hiding it.
They DID NOT suggest I start smoking or drinking though & I was around 15 not 9.

To suggest & encourage her to smoke is not on.

Personally I wouldn't buy that stuff for my kid even if I knew he was doing it, Id want him to put out some effort to hide it and feel ashamed. Im a cunty mom that way lol.

Not normal. I assume that they didn't do this with you? I wonder why they would suddenly start with her. I don't know what you could do about this. Perhaps, you should take her to a doctor to see if the cigarettes have had any negative effects on her health. As for your parents, don't let them see her. Good luck.

My partner is the father of ten year old twin daughters. They came to stay with us 2 weeks ago. They are still here. They said to us on New year's day that their mum doesn't know they smoke but she will be aware they do by the time they arrive home next week. I will break the news gently to her, she smokes too so she cannot be too hypocritical of them. They manage to get cigarettes and hide them at home. Their . They said they are addicted to nicotine and need to smoke. Their father and I smoke so we bought them a couple of packs, they took deep hollowing cheek pulls as they inhaled and did the most perfect snaps. We felt so sorry for depriving them of nicotine. They are tall for their age. They excel in their schoolwork. Renae attained 97.2 and Lilly got 95.7 in last year's (2017) exams. One came first in the class, the other third. They are very pretty, popular, one is class captain - the other vice captain. They have over 1300 facebook friends. They are a delight around the house, never question anything that needs to be done. They are very cute smokers. I am pregnant, i am putting my hand up for a girl and I will encourage her to smoke from about 7 or 8 years of age, which is first or second grade at school. They are helpful around the house. They have been smoking for 3 years.

If she's been smoking that much for that long she's probably addicted to nicotine by now, being so young she's probably gonna have uncontrollable urges or having fits for a square right? I wouldn't hold it against her too much, take it easy on her and maybe get a diluted vapor for her to puff on when she acts up about it until you can ease her off of it. You could make her go cold turkey but, she might just hold it against you and do whatever she can to get her own haha, I guess anyway, I'm not really sure what a 9 year old is capable of.

YIKES!! WTH is wrong with your parents? It was funny when you said she smelled of fags because in the western world fag = homosexual male. But that aside, this is concerning, especially bcuz if she's dead set on smoking she'll do it and you can't do anything about it. Perhaps if she saw the downsides of smoking. Like yellow teeth, and how addicting they are, how expensive they are, etc. At nine though it might be hard to make her see that.. this is a tough situation!

That is really sucky (grand)parenting. Why get lung cancer at 60 when you can get it at 30?
Seriously, my uncle allowd his son to drink alcohol very early(9-10) because it was funny/cute and hes a raging alky these days.

I cannot believe that this actually happened. I'm sorry, I just don't believe you. I doubt there is one human being in this day and age that is not aware of the harmful effects of smoking, so why on earth would ANYONE give a 9 year old a cigarette, let alone a pack? Nope; I do not believe this post, at all.

You havent seen much of the asiatic islands then. Kids as young as 4 are smoking cigs right in front of their parents and the parents laugh about it.

I did not get the impression the OP was from a 3rd world country, did you?

No, sounds like the OP is from England, but I was just pointing out that there are people out there that dont care and give their kids whatever they want, even if its bad for them. Personally I dont think the grandparents should have done that, but there are other who would do that in this world.

My uncle started drinking with his Dad when he was 12.
He died when he was 42.

    Nine is WAY too young!
If she wanted to start, she should've waited till 15-16.
