Is it normal older neighbour guy is so thrifty and thankful for everything

he is 86 and still works part time as an economics professor.He has more energy than I do and is in better shape than I am and I am 24. he gets mad when people waste anything or people throw anything out and makes use of everything.All of his clothes look nice but they are old, he refuses to buy new because their are nothing wrong with them. But he has money. all the little things that ruin my day like the dumb cashier taking all day or starbucks wifi not working don't seem to bother him. He gets so happy when anyone does anyone nice for him it seems fake but I don't think it is.I guess his lady friend told me this is off the record but at one point when he was young he was really really poor and he didn't have a very happy childhood at all, but he doesn't like to talk about it.I just don't get it.How he can be so happy when his life has been so hard?

    He sounds like an understanding wose and caring man. He understands that the person in the shop cant go any faster etc hence doesnt get mad. But understands how that peoples effort money and resources have been wasted when stuff doesnt get used oris thrown away etc. :) hope this helps you understand. Sounds a little like myself. Id love to meet this man- he sounds awsome.

    Struggle and hard work are their own rewards. Just like respect, things earned are always worth more than those things we get for free.
    Too many young people feel the world owes them and expect everything to just fall into their laps, unearned.
    At 86 this cat knows what it feels like to have earned everything he now has and that gives him a feeling of achievement and satisfaction. Those give him happiness.
    I keep telling y'all, life is a grand wonderful adventure and all you do is thumb me down and hate on me. Your loss, not mine or his!

    He grew up in the Depression. Many people from that era have a frugal outlook. Some people just choose to be positive about everything.
