The problem with socialism is, eventually we'll run out of other people's money.
Let the anthem go, that's fine. Just keep the money you made for you and family... Private property .

I'm not a "commie" but I don't stand for stupid songs I don't agree with or give any respect to bits of fabric with imperialistic designs on them.

I do remember the 50's though, when a farm worker in my small town didn't stand for the national anthem and shortly afterwards his house was deliberately set on fire with him, his wife and small kids inside.

We didn't have McCarthy in Australia but we did and still do have right wing fuckwits, some of whom are very violent and back then a "commie" was the worst thing anyone could possibly be.

You benefit financially from that imperialism. If you don't stand for it, then get the fuck out of the country and move to some third world craphole who doesn't have a history of conquering.

Some of my ancestors were among the dispossessed and others among the invaders, but I acknowledge I benefit from that invasion, which is the first step towards any reconciliation

I remember back in school when we had to do the pledge of allegiance and someone sang the national anthem everyday. It was so pointless. By high school, most of us didn't bother to stand up for it and just carried on doing what we were doing.

I remember that too. Sounds crazy. These days it would be something we might see on TV that North Korea is forcing their kids to do

I stand reluctantly. The US may not much of a country, but it's the best place in the world to be rich. And, the anthem sounds good when you play it on an alto sax.

I was really only sort've joking. But I won't stand up for a song I don't like or pledge to a piece of cloth that means nothing to me. If America is founded on freedom, isn't it my freedom to not give a shit about dumb traditions?

Yea it is your freedom. And the cloth itself means nothing, you're right. But It's symbolic of the thing that gives you you that freedom though, so I think it's just respectful to stand.

Its not the law to stand but you probably should. its good to show some respect, and why make life harder for yourself by misplacing any sense of civil disobedience.

I grew up doing it from 1956 to now. When I was a kid my dad would stand when they played it when TV was going off the air. He was born in 1903.

No when he drank it was a wine burgundy I think. He has been dead since 1966. And drink has little to do with national pride. Ask a Irishman. LOL
