Is it normal my rolled r's sound like a growl?

I am Puerto Rican, and they say that PR's can't roll their tongues, so i'm not sure if this is why. Is it supposed to sound like growling? When my friends roll their R's, it doesn't sound like their growling, but mine do. Is this the normal way to do it, or am i doing it wrong?
