Is it normal my mum wants us to dry the shower after use?

My mum has hung up a cloth in the shower and attached a note asking us to use the cloth to dry the walls of the shower after each use. Is this a normal request or would you call it OCD?

(I'm now considering taking baths instead as it seems like less bother)

If you live in England it becomes a routine because of the hard water, if you don't you'll get nice thick layer of white shit.

It's not uncommon. Most people would just use a squeegee. And I would imagine she'd ask you to dry the bath after, too, if she's that concerned about it.

It does save on cleaning for a small inconvenience. I don't bother with it, but I know it would make my life a tiny bit easier if I wasn't so lazy.

Also, one small request isn't a sign of OCD. It drives me mad when people misuse that. It's an actual disorder, not just people liking things to be neat or organised a certain way.

    • Ok I apologise maybe pedantic is a better word.

Well for starters, OCD is something people HAVE, not something they ARE.

So probably try and learn what it actually is before making a mental health diagnosis.

            • I understand what you're saying but if you met my mum I'm sure you'd agree she IS OCD. Lol.

It's an oddity, but I don't think it's abnormal. I do think it is a little OCD.

    • Thank you for your answer. I tend to agree. It's probably to stop the build up of mould over time, sort of a prevention is better than a cure strategy, as scrubbing later takes a bit of elbow grease. Still, it feels weird to me.

That's something I would have never guessed and if that's why, then that's really interesting. I might even start doing that...haha.

But if you clean the bathroom every other day or week, then it shouldn't be a problem.

Agreed, not normal...maybe just a habit of hers from when she was younger?

It really doesn't matter if it's OCD or not. For free room and board (and clothes, computers, phone, time online, etc) you should be more than happy to do whatever she asks of you.

    • I have seen your comments here for quite awhile and noticed you tend to assume and jump to wild conclusions about people. You should be careful with that.

What is so wild about assuming a child lives rent/board etc free? Is that not the normal thing, as in the majority or most often done?
If you are a special case, don't you think it would have been a good thing to mention it? Or did you just not care that MOST would assume you lived rent free?

Now, why state the obvious? The response did little to nothing to aid a logical answer. Also, if you tend to be the type to do as your told and not have a mind of your own, you are lucky to have made it this far in life. With that being said, "is it normal to dry the shower walls after each use?" (you failed to answer if you do or don't dry the shower walls)

I state the obvious because obviously it needs stating; the OP and one other poster seem not to grasp the obvious.
I ignored the dumb ass question about OCD, because it is unanswerable. As for drying the shower walls, good reasons for doing so have already been given. I don't need to repeat them, do I?

        • What country are you from? Where I live parents are grooming their offspring to be responsible members of the public which includes practice for the real world, paying their way. these are hard times I don't know anyone who free loads but maybe there are, I'm not going to assume anything.

    • I pay board and buy all my own clothes, use my own phone and do all the chores required of me, I'm not a freeloader. This just seems ridiculous though, and my question stands; is it OCD? Or is this normal? Have you seen it in your or other households/accommodation you have stayed in?

OK, fine. One normally assumes children do not pay rent, etc.
If you do that's cool, but it's still her home, so that makes it her 'house rules', right?
If you do not like the 'house rules' then it's easy enough to move out.
I worked on one yacht where the owner's wife insisted that all dirty laundry must be folded before being put in the hamper. Crazy sure, but 'house rules' none the less.
We all do what we must to get along.

Have you had to deal with someone who was overwhelmingly OCD in which it impedes in people's lives? And who says he is living there free? There are parents that force their kids to pay rent. No need for assumptions.

Common sense would be that most children do NOT pay rent, so unless it is so stated, I tend to assume they don't. At any rate, if someone lives in someone else's home, they should abide by the rules of the home owner, or leave.
if they seem a bit off the wall or overboard, does that make the home owner ill? I don't think so.

It's a little odd, but my mom has asked me to do that on occasion (though not regularly) to keep mold from growing anywhere. Maybe that's a reason?

It's a good idea actually. It keeps it mildew free and much cleaner. Trust me, I'm not a doctor.

Geez, how hard is it to just wipe the walls and be glad you have a place to live. Have you tried scrubbing hard water stains off tile?
