Is it normal my kid will only eat breaded chicken sticks and ketchup

Probably for a year now he hasn't eaten anything but chicken sticks, soda and candy. He's 6, is it normal for kids this age?

Yes, this is normal if your 6yo has a job, and buys and prepares his own food. But if he's like most 6yo's, he relies on a parent or guardian, perhaps you, to do this for him. If that is the case, it is not normal for you to choose to feed him nothing but chicken sticks, candy and soda, regardless of what a 6yo demands.

It's not even normal nor is it good for adults.

Obviously you allow him to eat only those things.

It may be normal for him to craves such things seeing as he is six but it is not normal for you to give in to his demands, you need to find a way to compromise, he will thank you in the future.

What a terrible parent you must be. Not only are you raising a malnourished child, but allowing him to do only as he pleases, is just bad parenting. Children must be taught to eat what is healthy; that is YOUR job, as a parent.
Call somebody at child services for help, because you are obviously incapable of being a good parent, as things stand.

Your kid eats what you allow him to eat.

If he refuses to eat a healthy plate of food, take his food away, throw him outside so he can sleep on the cold damp grass and kick him in the ribs.

Do it like they do in Alabama

That is so unhealthy. I wish this didn't really happen. Kids are picky eaters, hut they only eat what you give them so you had to introduce that crap at some point. You are not doing him any favors by giving in.

Your child is a picky eater but this has been going on for a year?! This is crazy. Make soda a special treat and candy, something that he can only have until after he eats healthy meals. As the gypsysailor said, your son is malnourished. Does he have a doctor?

At least, he is getting protein from the meat. But, too much protein can create serious health issues, especially with the kidneys.

Give him veggies with melted cheese over them. I was a picky eater too, I hated veggies unless they were potatoes. My mother gave me carrots with melted cheese over them and I loved it! I was obsessed. I also ate broccoli with the same treatment.

Carrots are best cooked in the oven, with oil instead of water. If you just use water, the carrots come out very soft. Veggies like broccoli should be steamed on the stove top. Improperly cooked/uncooked cruciferous vegetables contain goitrogens, which cause problems for the thyroid.

Chinese food is delicious and healthy way to incorporate vegetables. The only thing I would be concerned with are the high sodium sauces the restaurant may use. You can balance this out by drinking lots of water.

      This is terrible advice.

Don't cave to your child's unhealthy eating habits by adding tons of fat and grease to vegetables. The goal should be to have him eating healthy, not swapping one unhealthy food for another.

There is nothing healthy about Chinese food at all - or at least the Americanized version of it. Everything is deep fried and slathered in tons of oil.

Baby steps. She doesn't have to add oil to steam his veggies. If she does, coconut oil is better than olive oil. Olive oil is too goopy and coconut oil has many health benefits. Coconut milk is also healthy.

She doesn't have to give him Chinese Takeout. She can get a wok and make it for him at home. The traditional Chinese diet is extremely healthy, they would both benefit from trying it out.

She can substitute soda for juice. Candy for berries. Etc.

  • I grew up on a steady diet of pop-tarts, Mountain Dew, coffee, and cheeseburgers (plain, ketchup only), pretty much in that order. My parents indulged these habits and now, I've got bad teeth, extremely small bones, I'm short, brain-dead, and I get tired really freaking easily.

You're the one giving it to him!
That's not healthy at all. He's the child YOU are the parent. YOU tell him what to do. Make him something healthy if he doesn't want to eat it send him to bed and tell him he will go hungry tonight.
    Eventually he will eat something.

Or tell him the world ran out of soda, chicken strips and ketchup.

Do not continue this. This can lead to what is called "Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder". See the cheesy potatoes segment on Freaky Eaters if you want to know what it looks like.

Pfft, I love seeing all the negative comments here. Been on a heavily chicken nugget diet for 18+ years now. Hasn't done me any harm yet (knock on wood). I grew out of my picky eating as I got older. Honestly there are some battles that are worth fighting and ones not. Don't be so uptight that your kid will shut you out in the future.

If only you knew how much those nuggets have screwed you up.
Eye balls, feathers, beaks, bits of flesh dropped on the factory floor and swept up at the end of shift, combined with intestines and crushed bones, which are all "pure, natural" chicken products. This is what you are eating if you eat "chicken nuggets". Doesn't it sound just so good? No thanks, I'll take the Indonesian monkey soup instead, thanks. Or even the Philippine spicy dog meat shish kabobs.

Where is your source for the statement "dropped on the factory floor and swept up at the end of shift, combined with intestines and crushed bones"?
