Is it normal most people think aspergers/autism people are retarded?

Growing up with aspergers has been difficult, not because of the mental issue, but because of how people react to it.

The first time I was diagnosed as a young child the school I was attending immediately took me away from my normal class and abandoned me in the "special" care classroom, which was crowded with braindead kids who didn't even know how to count to ten.

The only tasks we were permitted to do was either draw crudely in a coloring book or occasionally learn simple mathamatics such as simple addition and subtraction, despite my normal class being on division.

The teachers there would treat me like a idiotic fool that didn't know how to care for himself which often pissed me the fuck off. Eventually my mother managed to pull me out of there and get me back into my previous class, however the teachers still did not treat me right.

It wasn't easier in high school either, I was allowed to be in normal classes however the special care teachers were always up my ass on joining them, visiting me in class and harassing me if I even dared to skip homework or an assignment.

I'll admit during my younger years I was a tad slower than average and my learning pace wasn't normal, however I managed to get through without help.

Now I hate mentally ill people, I don't want them anywhere near me due to being forced to be stuck with them for so long. I understand to normal, more emotional people this may sound cruel, but honestly I cannot stand to be near them.

I don't tell anyone about my diagnosis either unless necessary, because I'm not going to be treated as a clumsy drooling fool with the IQ of a peanut. I am far from mentally challenged, and the ones who think people with aspergers or autism are stupid are stupid themselves. One of the smartest known men, Albert Einstein had a form of autism, and that didn't stop him from being more intelligent than you neurotypicals, did it?

My brother got stuck in special classes and rode the short bus cause he had a heart problem and only attended half days of school. Public school is fucked in so many ways. I also had a mentally disabled kid in several of my regular classes when I was in high school, pretty sure his parents fought to keep him out of special classes. It made no sense though, while I sat there learning algebra, he was in the back of the class putting different shaped blocks through corresponding holes. Kid could not even speak a sentence but he got A's in classes I got B's and C's in.

I understand how you feel. I was treated the same way a lot until I figured out how to deal with it (I have Asperger's, disgraphia, and a mild ADHD). I know that you dislike those with that kind of issue. However, many of them are like you were. They just have more issues translating their thoughts and ideas into comprehensive ideas and expressions. If one were to remove the social stipulation many would improve. My recovery was greatly expedited through being told that my brainpower is just allocated in different areas. Many of these people are acting like that because they know no better. We, like lepers, are being dumped into pits where we are exposed to only others of our kind, and this is worsening our conditions. If you wanted to do anything help us return to mainstream societies as your mother did for you.

I've a son "on the spectrum" and no, I don't think people with Asperger's or Autism are retarded.

That said, look at Carly Fleischmann. Many people would regard her as "retarded" (ugh - that word really makes me shudder), especially before she started using aids to counter her lack of speech. Heck, with the stiming etc - there are probably people out there who STILL regard her as mentally defective.

Or take Cerebral Palsy. Most sufferers of CP are mentally unaffected, yet as soon as people see a wheelchair or a walking frame, immediately they are labeled as "retarded".

Or what about ALS sufferers? Steven Hawking "looks" like a "vegetable", but is one of the most brilliant minds in the world today.

While your experiences are sad, even typical of those on the Autism Spectrum who fought their way through the education system 20 years ago, the fact that you now "hate retards" is appalling. I would have thought the experience would have left you with a little more compassion, in spite of the fact that your condition makes empathy a difficult thing to comprehend.

    • I don't like the word retarded either, it was used against me often back in school as an insult.

I view people of what you described mentally challenged, although I'm not talking about the people like Steven Hawking, he is extremely intelligent. The people I had to interact with were incredibly child like, couldn't make proper decisions for themselves, had violent tantrums if they couldn't get something like ice cream and would then proceed to scream and attack anyone nearby, etc.

I'm not saying everyone in a wheelchair or someone with mental difficulties is like that though, it's just those people I described above that make me uncomfortable being around them.

Hate might of been a too strong of word, I wouldn't or approve of people insulting them or making fun of them or anything like that, I just don't want to interact or be anywhere near them if that makes sense.

So you think maybe they should all be euthanized?

    • Unless they are literally a vegetable and can't survive without someones care 24/7 or cannot think for themselves, yes.

People in wheelchairs or just have the mind of a five year old are fine, it would be cruel to kill them, I just don't want to be anywhere near them

Why do you believe it would be cruel to end there life of misery? Wouldn't it be a kindness to end there suffering and relieve the burden they make on society?

        • Because they are still functioning humans and have feelings and emotions, it would be horrible to force enthanization on them if they didn't want it, it would basically be murder.

I mean if they were suffering with their life and wanted to end it, that would be different but they would need to get help from different psychologists and doctors, afterwards if they feel like nothing can help them other than euthanizeation then yes they should get their wish granted.

Society makes judgement calls about a great many things such as who is eligible for entitlements and such. Don't you think there should be a mechanism in place to eliminate those that will never provide a contribution said society? Obviously at some point the quality of life that is possible is subpar. Why should everyone else have to bear the burden of providing for them? Wouldn't those funds give more benefit overall if used to give gifted individuals a better education becos there contribution will clearl provide a benefit?

Except mental illness does not automatically result in being useless and a life of 100% misery. For example, Howie Mandel has OCD but he continues to contribute to society. Many celebrities had depression and many have managed to recover. I can expand the list a lot more.

Screw you, you are so insensitive that you think you can take someone's choice of life away like that. Fuck society. They're HUMAN BEINGS.
