Is it normal most people exaggerate their accent?

I think most people with heavy accents do not actually speak that way ( like Glaswegian and low class Australian ) I think it's just bravado cause it's almost expected for them to say " aye ya wee laddie" and " crickey! You little blighter".
I refuse to believe Arnold aka The Gropinator has lived in the US for this long and still sounds like an SS officer. Anybody want to admit their accent is s load of crap? When you're sitting at home, you just sound like a regular nondescript person don't you?

It amuses me when foreigners think we all speak like the crocodile hunter.

Look up trent from punchy. THAT is what a low class Australian sounds like.

Diffidently from the South lol. I deal with it every day and people really do sound like that they even do it text messages. Kids grow up talking Southern and to me it would be almost impossible to break from my accent. You use at home, teachers use heavy accents in school, truly some people can't change something ingrained into them most of there lives even if you move away or even speak a new language. The accent is hard to get rid of and I definitely speak that way to my family or my home because that's whats 'natural" for people with those accents.

For what its worth, I think you should be proud of your accent. (I think southern accents sound quite nice). I'm French, and sometimes I wish I could get rid of my accent because people sometimes make assumptions about me without getting to know me first.

Exactly! I get 'dumb farm hick' it seems from southern Arkansas just by opening my mouth, all the time. None the less I can't make it go away.

I thought your people came from a bit West, or is it East of that accent, but it was funny!

nobody puts an effort into their accent. heavy accents sometimes sound fake but when from a real person - ie not someone whos putting on an accent for a joke as such as on most of tv - they're definitely real. very few go out of their way to do exaggerate their accent.

(also people generally unconsciously adopt the local accents they're around!)

my Dad from Hungary, came to U.S in the 50's and had a thick accent till he died in 1994. I can still imitate him to a T! I also have seen people all of a sudden have an accent change, and it seems SO phony, it irritates me! I hate phoniness!

Scousers are the worst for this they think everyone loves their accent and they never shut up about the fact that they are from Liverpool

Some people definitely do, because they want to feel closer to the country they came from and the accent becomes a part of their identity, they don't want to lose it.

People who don't even have an accent do it too, I went to t in the park in Scotland a few years ago and my friends girlfriend who grew up in the same town as us adopted a mildly Scottish accent as soon as we crossed the border, thought its just be for a bit but it lasted the whole time we were there and for a few days after we got back

No, it sounds like cringeworthy immature attention seeking but she's really not that type of person and swore she didn't know she was doing it
