Is it normal mental disconnect between online communications and people irl?

I don't know if this makes sense but - I experience a disconnect when I read people's online communications (comments, questions, etc.) and seeing people in real life.

When I read online stuff I feel like it's somehow impersonal. It's pure words and pure thoughts, without a body, disconnected from anything visual.

No, I'm not hallucinating or insane. I understand what reality is and I understand how people online are people IRL but my mind won't link the two in a way. When I read online stuff I can't picture a real person writing it.

Is this normal?

I know what you mean. Online, you're getting someone's thoughts without seeing a face or hearing a voice. On the phone, you don't see a face but you hear a voice. In person, you see a face and hear a voice. Each one of those things takes you closer to taking it literally, personally, and to feel a connection.

It's common, and it's why so many people are complete dickheads online.
