Is it normal manager was angry with me for

For the past seven years I've worked with the company, I have not once been scheduled on a Saturday. Sunday, sure but not Saturday. A new boss came in and put me on the schedule for Saturday but I had already made a doctors appointment and dentist appointment for that day. So I told my manager, I apologize but because I haven't worked a Saturday in my seven years of working for the company, I scheduled several things on that day and said if there's anyway you can take me off, I'd really appreciate it.

He shot back, "If your availability says Saturday, then I can schedule whenever I damn please. I'll mark you as a no show. I can't take you off the schedule for next week. Next time, make sure you let us know two weeks before!" and he slammed the phone down... so I was wondering, is this normal to treat someone this way/ react this way?

I seriously didn't expect to be scheduled for a saturday.. they take me off tuesday and put me on saturday, like what, random. I never didn't work a tuesday in my entire seven years. My schedule has not changed once.

Jerkwad managers like that are fairly common. Unfortunately.

As a new manager he should have communicated with the old one about scheduling. But, judging by his little tantrum over the phone, I don't think he did this whatsoever. When I had a new manager take over at one of my jobs, she studied the old schedules religiously to see what hours people generally worked. She then asked anyone if there were any availability changes and/or if they wanted anything from the previous schedule to be changed.

Unfortunately, there are too many bosses in this world and not enough leaders. Although rude and uncalled for, his behavior is quite common. Managers and bosses have major power trips and think that their position of power is enough cause to go ape shit on people for no reason. Yes, he does have a point that your availability says Saturdays, but he should have been much more understanding than that. The way he acted was pretty childish.

In short, it IS normal that he got made over something silly. Not right, but normal.

  • It's normal to have a manager who gets angry at everything.

He does sound like a cunt. Do you work in retail by any chance?

He sounds like a cunt and it's the law that they have to give at least 2 weeks notice before changing your hours. You don't have to give any days notice before going to the doctors or dentists but it would be the decent thing to do. In regards to them changing your hours you said you were available Saturdays so you have to like it or lump it I'm afraid.

Sadly you are not the company.
I can also assume your old boss was quickly forgotten by all, and he was the boss!

Work is very cold, and without compassion.
We work for money and try to enjoy it.
I 'think' .0000001% of the population enjoy their work every single day, I don't think they are the bosses either ;)
