I've seen features like this before and they are always abused, even in mentally stable communities, the abuse would be off the chart on this site.
What happens is that you're not able to like someone too often, this is a safety feature so the system is not abused, but 3, 4 or more users get in a "liking" circle jerk and elevate themselves up to where they have the power to send someone to the ninth circle of hell with one "dislike".
This place is rude and petty enough without adding some nonsense like this for people to bitch about. Vote no people, think of the children!
The site already kinda works this way. Because the higher your comment karma the more weight your opinion carries. If it is high enough, you can gets posts taken down and sent to moderation with just your single report. You increase your karma bu getting a lot of likes on your comments.
It would seem we already have this in place with the karma system, although the karma is private. This idea wouldn't work anyway, because you could just make multiple accounts to upvote yourself.
Certain people here complain about being "ostracized" or down-voted for their opinions, but I am pretty sure their opinion is not the reason they get downvoted, it's the delivery.
For example: "I disagree with Subject A, even though most people agree with it." This is a perfectly cordial way to state your opinion.
Example 2: "I disagree with subject A, and if you agree with it I'll hunt you down and gut you like a fish, you piece of shit." This is not an acceptable way to discuss your ideas.
I'm guilty of example 2 but agree example 1 is a better delivery. However, if the message is simply delivered and is valid the users of INN should be intelligent enough to decern example 1 and 2 are the same answers and vote on that answer based solely on validity as opposed to delivery.
I utilise Example 2 and then everyone votes me up. I don't understand it at all. It's probably one huge inside prank they pull on me because I am so lonely.
If you're merely joking and you're generally a nice member of the site, then people will know you're joking. Some people and some of the trolls here are rather mean. If they want to be a part of the discussion, they should just be a little nicer with their delivery. Have some sugar, sugar!
One time I was hanging out with my brother when he was stoned off his ass, and he kept eating shitloads of ice cream. In an attempt to stop himself, he dumped a load of garlic salt on top of his carton of ice cream, and then promptly changed his mind 10 minutes later, and decided to scrape off the top part and try to eat it. Never have I seen such projectile vomit. It was epic.
You are a fake bitch who needs to be liked by everyone to validate yourself because you have very low self esteem.
Oh and that will work how? With the cowardly users with multiple screen names just what do you think the end result would be?
Even the present thumbs up or down is horribly abused by these assholes who obviously thumb up or down from many accounts.
Citizens United on IIN.
I don't think it's needed. The thumbs are enough.
BUT, I don't agree that it would result in a circle jerk, as other comments suggested.
That would happen if the percentage of likes were shown. But you're suggesting the percentage of *users* who like someone would be shown.
So, if the same handful of users repeatedly 'like' X's comments, their "likability" percentage would still be lower than someone who's received less overall 'likes', but from more users.
Or...., someone who received one 'like' from each user would have a greater % than someone who received 10,000 'likes' from only 6 users, say. It's the variety of users being measured, not the overall amount of likes.
That's how I see it based on how you phrased it, but I don't know exactly how it would work. And people can still make multiple accounts.
I just don't think a rating system encourages the best comments. Yeh, there's a lot of bullshit on here at the moment, but I think it comes and goes in waves anyway.
I'm only voting yes because the ensuing drama would amuse me. It wouldn't be a great idea, but it would make me laugh.
Also, anything that would help get rid of the literotica reject tards would be awesome.
There could be a rewarding system too. Members with highest percentages could get the following from Management: yearly IIN Gold or just something small that you really like. Ones that are just every-day members could get participation prizes (such as nice or funny knick-knacks). Management, please consider this!
That doesn't work either. Those that abuse the system do it without shame. Their circle jerk can be completely obvious and they'll still do it.
I assumed the suggestion was a joke, so my comment was just following suit :O which also means I voted yes.
I voted NO. It will turn IIN into a battleground. I would be in favor of a likability number for each anonymous post.
