Is it normal killers and bad people in history are glorified?

Take Jack the Ripper for example. There is a lot of mystery and intrigue about him, he's seen as a twisted Romantic figure. The murders add to the Romanticism of his character. People don't hate him for what he's done, instead it's a bit of juicy, gory history that they can enjoy because it happened so long ago. They go on Jack the ripper walks in London, dress up as him on Halloween, and people are often remaking movies and series inspired by him because people can't get enough of the gruesome, seductive mystery. They even find him sexy and seductive. There are other people too that people like and will dress up as e.g. Ghengis khan, Rasputin, Atilla the Hun.

Do you have a favourite villain from history and why is it acceptable? What does this say about human nature?

I suppose I have a guilty pleasure for Vlad Dracul Tepes. Not because Bram Stoker based Dracula on him, but because even though he was a sadistic ruler, he near on brought down the Ottoman Empire.

Entire armies lost their nerve and refused to fight him after seeing the aftermath of the previous army impaled along the river.

Also to add to the mystery, when he was killed and buried, researchers later on in 1930 exhumed his grave and found only dog bones.

He still remains a folk hero in Romania to this day.

I think the whole mystique with JtR is that he never was identified or caught. It makes an interesting story to speculate about who he was.
Genghis Khan and Atilla the Hun were larger than life historical figures that changed the world. By today's standards they may be thought of as murders or tyrants, but in their own time they were distinguished leaders and respected by many.

Yeah, Ghengis Khan created the largest empire on the planet. He was a hero to his people! I don't think he was "evil"... He just was ruthless compared to today's standards.

Yes. I think it's bad, but I'm guilty of it myself: It's just interesting to me, what was going on in Dahmer's or Bundy's head.

Murders don't add to romanticism. In any way. Unless you are one of them people that writes fan letters to serial killers on death row asking to marry them and shit.

    • This isn't your average killer on death row dingbat. Im talking about someone like jack the ripper, for which there is a lot of mystique and intrigue whether you see that or not.

ok just making sure.... That shits just weird. Jack the Ripper... Don't they have a pretty good idea of who that guy was? Too bad they didn't know about DNA and finger prints back then. They definately would have nailed that bastard to channel wall and let the tide drown him. But then we wouldn't have this bad ass story and legend. I guess there is some amount of 'romanticism' attached to any legend.
