Is it normal it annoys me when people say americans are obese?

I'm not even fat but that is such a stupid statement. Sure, there are fat Americans but most of Americans aren't obese. The statistics are something like 27% of Americans are obese. That's not even half of America. So that would mean the majority of people ARE NOT obese.

What is up with people always saying "you're American? oh you must be obese"? I don't get it. If 70% of Americans were obese, then they could say it but 27%? Really?

The statistics aren't even legitimate because no one knows the weight of every American and many speculate it's probably lower than that by a few percentages.

is it normal it gets under my skin when I see this ignorance?

Yes. People are ignorant. It's the same as saying all British people have fucked up teeth.

i'm sure the people who use the statement "you're american, you must be obese" aren't too concerned about the validity of it. In fact, they are probably incredibly ignorant and mis-informed.
    so yes, it is normal

What I learned from this thread is that I should insult other nations based off a statistic that may or may not be accurate.

Also, peeps, stats do not equal fact. Maybe if some of you learn how statistics are compiled... They're really not a magic answer, and are often greatly exaggerated or biased.

They're just throwing out an insult because they're pissy about something else. They know we aren't all fat.

That is obese which is very fat. The % of overweight is over 50.

I'm sure it matters where you live in america as well. I live in England wand here I live you see an obese person about once a month, and I'm sure that's the case in some places in america, although I also assume there are some places with very high obesity rates.

Still about 1 in 3 being obese sounds pretty bad, but I don't know how big a person has to be to qualify as obese...

Go to any European airport and watch a plane from America unload. Americans exiting the plane are fucking FAT as fuck. The distribution of BMI compared to the European distribution is so obvious that its just gross.

No wonder the world hates Americans.

It's a pretty big deal for the US to have a statistic like that. It doesnt matter if Mexico or some other country has more obese people. The US is/was a trendsetter (iphone facebook google hollywood), arguably the "leader" of the world if you were forced to pick one. There is even the term "Americanized." I've never heard of Russianized or Chinesed. Even politically it's a very significant country...

And 27% of its people are obese. In light of all of the above, and compared to other super power countries that becomes an incredibly high percentage

It's normal that it gets under your skin, but every country has its stereotypes

I trust the statistic. The rate is around around 30% nationwide for obesity and 30% for being overweight. Although I believe that it could be slightly inaccurate (as they are using the BMI chart which does not take into account that weight could also include muscle mass and some people who are classified as obese would pass a body fat test, easily). Simply put, the majority of Americans are overweight.

Despite this, I know that there is an abundance of Americans who are overweight and "normal" weight who exercise, eat right and so on. I don't feel weight (up until you get to obesity levels) is a true prediction of health. Weight is only a byproduct of one's general health and lifestyle and is not always immediately telling of which.

I get what you are saying. The stereotype, while it does have some basis in reality, is ridiculous. It's a ridiculous generalization and it is a ridiculous taunt. Until I see hard data proving that everyone who is overweight and obese in this country is that way solely due to their lifestyle choices, I will continue to disregard this criticism. Are a lot of them that way due to lifestyle? Sure. How many are? Well, HIPPA rightfully keeps that information private.

I never understand this either because although America is one of the fattest countries in the world after Nauru, Cook Islands, Marshall Islands and Mexico, it's true what you say. Less than half of them are obese and people tend to assume that 30% means about 95% and are incorrect as that's flawed thinking. America doesn't seem to have as many obese people as not from what I've observed/the states I've visited so I'd say that statistic is definitely accurate. Out of every 10 people, from what I've seen, it seems to be only 2 of those 10 are obese so the majority are definitely not obese.

I think stereotyping is unfortunate as it breeds ignorance and because of that, it never stops. Even when America drops down on the list more, they'll still continue to say it because to them, truth means nothing. They just enjoy insulting people because they're unhappy with themselves or they're just not very bright.

It is indeed a FACT, you know those things that are irrefutable, like the earth does circle the sun, not the other way around, that a greater percentage of the American population is technically obese, than any other country. How can you argue that? Have you actually done your own survey and come up with different figures? Do you actually think the few thousand people you might encounter over a week or so is a perfect cross section of the US population of 313.9 million?
I admire your self confidence and find it astounding that you could possibly come to the conclusion that everyone else is wrong and you are right; Americans cannot be obese because you think it is so.

    • Why do you like to delude yourself with incorrect facts and go against truth? The percentage seems to fluctuate between 26% and 31% so what I wrote is the FACT and your statement is the fiction. Less than half of Americans are obese. You're just like all the other ignorant people and this was the entire point of my post. Why are you the only one not understanding or accepting this? Your random claim that most Americans are obese is incorrect based on statistics and by living here, I observe that in my day-to-day life.

What does the few thousand people I encounter each day have anything to do with national statistics conducted by several different sources? I never said I made up these statistics as educated people know less than half of Americans are obese and that there's a silly stereotype out there which claims most are obese when that's not true. More Americans are not obese than obese, it's simple. Also, out of the developed countries, Mexico is more obese than America.

To all you assholes that thumbed this stupid idiot up and me down, try reading the posts. Nowhere did I EVER say " that most Americans are obese", NOWHERE.
What I did say, which is a completely different thing, "a greater percentage of the American population is technically obese, than any other country" which is true. Shame on each and every one of you for blindly following Anonymous Poll Creator without actually reading either post. You all suck!

Oh for fuck's sake. You can read into what I wrote whatever the fuck you choose, but that does not make me wrong!
Where did you see "Your random claim that most Americans are obese" in my post? Where? Please, I beg you, where? You, like hauntedbysandwiches can make up what you please, but what I said was in fact, "a greater percentage of the American population is technically obese, than any other country" which is a far cry from, "Your random claim that most Americans are obese". God damn I get tired of being misquoted by assholes like you. Try reading a little tiny bit. "Technically obese" is a term used by the medical profession and relates to BMI, not necessarily what you might think of as fat. So, it is a fact that, "a greater percentage of the American population is technically obese, than any other country", whether it pleases your tiny fucking mind, or not. Again, I did NOT say, "most Americans are obese", but that "a greater percentage (PERCENTAGE, PERCENTAGE) of the American population is technically obese". Do you understand the difference, yet? So you and hauntedbysandwiches thumb me down, bad mouth me or hate me, even though you both are obviously too stupid to understand the difference between what you say I wrote and what I did write. Learn to read, boys.

Yes ignorant sweeping generalizations of a group is often annoying and are not being made by the most intelligent people in the world. In an ideal world these people would have been killed off by nature but since we have a safe environment that is safe from most other threats besides other humans this type of idiocy is allowed to breed and prosper. However these idiots existing often creates great suffering and irritation to those of us who are more intelligent and less close minded than these ignoramus.

While I won't claim you're right or wrong on facts (I didn't look into them), the point of the post is moreso about stereotyping. Saying you're American so you must be fat is incorrect and accusational. That's the point the OP found important.

That's exactly what I got out of their question. I think he misinterpreted it and because his comment comes off as very abrasive and ignorant, the OP felt they needed to respond that way which I can understand. He missed the point of the topic which is why they responded as they did.

Anyway, I agree with the OP as I think it's wrong to call Americans obese and make the assumption they're all obese when that's not the case.

It no longer really matters about the veracity of the claims made in these posts, it's about being attacked unjustly by simpletons who simply can't read and therefor draw conclusions based on their mistaken impressions, not that which was posted.
I couldn't care less if these cretins like me or agree with my posts, but the very least they can do is read what I have posted and not put words in my mouth.

Very awful and ill-informed comment. I'm hoping you're someone who hates America and continues to try to keep a faux fact alive just for the sake of feeling better about yourself. No statistics show more Americans are obese than not so to make up a horribly inaccurate fact of your own is rather juvenile and naive.

He didn't say more Americans are more obese than not. He thought OP was saying Americans aren't the most obese nation. He misunderstood the post.
As for his facts, they're correct. America tops the list of obesity on every result on the first page of google except one from 2013 which Mexico topped. Whether his response was rude and irrelevant, his facts were 100% correct. Him being rude has nothing to do with the credibility of his facts. He made nothing up except the scenario he thought OP painted.
