Is it normal if a stranger insults you to feel really depressed afterward

I was working really early morning today at 7:00am in a huge retail store which sells a wide range of goods.
A male customer carrying a child asked me for the location of clothing pegs.

I wasn't sure since I'm new, and everyone else was busy, so I tried to search it up on our system to find the location. The system only gave me one brand, which was in the craft and paint section. But I remember seeming some in the laundry section.
I directed him up stairs to check both.

But they soon came back down complaining that there's no aisle number I gave them for the location of the pegs. But I noticed that the man misheard me so I told him the aisle numbers again. I also asked him to wait so I could double check with one of my coworkers for the exact location of the clothing pegs. But He just ignored me and just went straght up stairs to look again.

He came back down again the last time really mad saying there's no clothing pegs upstairs and also complained how no one was up there yet to help. But what did he expect we just opened the store.

He then stormed out with his child and I tried to assure him it was on the back wall of the aisle I directed him to, but he ignored what I said and called me useless.

I was really shocked because never met a stranger that rude in my life. Its usually people I know who are rude to me.

And the clothing pegs were up stairs, my coworker assured me after the customer stormed out.

I spent my lunch break outside balling my eyes out. Then went back to work for the rest of the day.

Sorry this is a really long post. Just needed to vent. And I suffer from depression and anxiety and this just made it worse.
I wanted to talk back to the customer but I didn't know what to say, and I might of gotten in trouble by my manager. What should I have done?

I have depression and anxiety too and have gotten negative treatment and comments from strangers like the time back in 2003 when I walked past a few guys and one of them looked at me and said "Yuck", it still hurts today when I see or hear the word Yuck I can't help thinking about that shallow pig and what he said. I also get looks of contempt and disgust from people and it ends up ruining my whole day. I try not to let it bother me but scars from emotional and verbal abuse don't fade that easily.

    • Yeah every time I hear the word useless, it reminds of that horrible customer. Then I start to tear up.

Yeah that's true. I guess I just have to learn how to control my feeling and to try and calm down.

Well if this is the worst thing that happens to you in your life, you are way ahead of the game. But if you remain in the service industry, like retail stores, there will always be people like him (or her) in your face. Usually because they have no real control over their personal lives and jobs so they over compensate when they do get a bit of control. Like over you, because you want to keep your job. When I am confronted by someone similar, I just smile at them and let them think that I did it on purpose. That really sets them off. If you give them your energy, you won't have any left for yourself.

    • It isn't the worst thing that happened to me sadly.
It's just another negative thing I have to pile on the rest of the shit I go through everyday.

Okay next time I'll just ignore him and not try to continue to help. Yeah I feel like its a waste of my time and energy helping rude customers like that.

Just forget about it. He was in a crappy mood. It's not worth the time to feel bad about it. I'm sure he's not losing sleep over it so neither should you

    • I'll try but will take me some time to get over this.
I feel much better today since work was great today with really nice customers.

I find as I get older I care less about what strangers think about me. I hope this guy doesn't ruin much more of your day!

    • That's good to know. At least I'll get tougher from now on.

Yeah I feel much better today. Its was nice weather and my team members were very fun. And the customers were so nice too.

in life generally you have to meet these kind of people sooner or later, so dont take it too serious just ignore it, i know its hard to just forget it i had a similar situation before, but believe me its better to just let it go.
always be the (0 fuck given) type of people :).

    • Yeah I always wanted to be a person who doesn't care for what other people think.
Guess I need more confidence to over come others peoples actions and thoughts towards me.

You just started working... Its okay.. there are and will be people like him around. Its part of the croud.
Don't you worry cause it's his bad not yours. If you werent on duty and he wasn't carrying a child would have advised you to kick him on nuts.
