Is it normal i wish everyone could vote on stories

If you have a gold membership, you get to see unmoderated posts and vote whether you like them or not.

I wish all users could mark a story as a good or bad story after moderation. The number of comments a story recieves is not a good indicator of a good story because it could be the result of an off topic conversation or an interactive OP. And sometimes people don't always vote on the stories.

So what if we could thumb up an entire post? We can mark it as a favorite, but that doesn't give feedback to the author that their story was truly enjoyed. And the flags at the bottom don't seem to be very useful to me.

What do you guys think? Is it normal to want to approve (not disapprove) a moderated story?

I hope this catches TheManagement's eye...

He has a profile on IIN why not send it to him? That or try sending it in feedback.

Ahh, but the problem is that to vote on a story you need to read it, and reading it is a Gold privilege. If it wasn't a Gold privilege, fewer people would buy Gold and the site (which already runs at a loss) would cost TheManagement even more to run.

I wouldn't be in favour of anything which makes this site more likely to shut down (such as fewer people buying Gold). What would be nice is more ideas for what Gold members can do/see making Gold even more attractive, meaning we get more people signed up and eventually at least repay what it has cost to run the site over the years.

I'm not in favour of a two-tier society but if the alternative is no society at all?

    • I didn't mean to take away any of the gold privileges. My thought was to provide a better feedback system for the moderators on what they do decide to approve. Only an indicator that the overall community enjoyed the question. Perhaps the gold feature should just be altered a bit. (Maybe a 5 star rating system?)

Because right now the "most popular" questions only refers to the most comments and isn't indicative of a good post.

Ahh, I know. I do feel the same as you but I answered negatively because it wouldn't be a good move within the current framework.

I'm guessing the majority of IIN users are non-Gold and it seems a shame to preclude them from providing a service to the site. I wonder whether there's a compromise, i.e. non-Gold members get to see story titles only and can vote on that basis (and their vote doesn't carry the same weight because they haven't seen the whole story, but does carry some weight). Getting to see titles only might make people curious about the content of the stories and may encourage them to buy Gold just out of their curiosity too, which then helps the site.

people with gold vote if the stories should be approved or not..?is that why many perfectly fine stories don't make it thru moderation anymore? ? =|

      Yes that is why.

I definitely agree with this. The community is fully capable of moderating our content rather than leaving it in the hands of a few privileged (paying) users.

My biggest gripe with the way the current system works is that new content is added only once a day, and in one huge heap. I'd say that instead of having posts wait to be approved by gold members before they become visible, have them be visible to the whole community immediately, and everyone can then vote it down off the site if they wish. And maybe the gold members can have a heavier vote, or special powers in the process or something.

And because the posts would be spread out over the coarse of the day, there's less of a chance of them getting lost underneath a huge pile of others.

But Gold doesn't give members the total choice of what is approved and what isn't. That decision is ultimately made by the moderator(s), a paid position. This is why the release of new stories is clumped together - whoever does the mod work must go through them all in one sitting, or something.

I'm not entirely sure what weighting the Gold votes are given in regard to moderation.

    • As Space Ghost said, I don't believe that the gold users are the ones responsible for the content. But I hope it's an effort to find the best stories, and not just a show. I don't know any other way to give feedback to the moderators.

I don't know how many mods there are but I don't imagine there are a lot of them. Which may be why content isn't added in regular intervals.

But I would like to give them feedback on their choices, not just the stories in general. How do the mods know what we IIN users truly enjoy seeing? Maybe it should just be for gold members as they are likely to have an invested interest to the site. But the current system doesn't seem to accommodate that.

What if we vote on whether or not the story is responsible or irresponsible, instead?
We should probably still allow some of the most irresponsible stories through though, so that we can have some fun trashing them, speaking colloquially.
    What do you think?
