Is it normal i want a tiny house?

I've watched the shows on TV about the new interest in tiny houses. These houses are really tiny, like 250-500 square feet (23-46 sq m). Sometimes they're on a regular neighborhood lot, or out in a nature setting, or even on wheels so you can haul it to a new location. Most of them look cool and have ingenious design features to make the best use of the small space. And, of course, they cost a ton less than a regular size house to buy and maintain.

My challenge is that I'd need to get rid of a lot of stuff! Right now I'm sitting in my family room, which is 360 sq feet - bigger than one of these whole houses!!!!

So, is it normal to want a tiny house, even if you could afford a regular size one??

Unless you can't afford it, what you can afford is irrelevant. You are not obligated to buy more house than you want or need just because you have the money to do so. If you find a house that you feel is perfect for you, tiny or not, and you are able to purchase it, it is completely normal to do so.

    • I couldn't agree more. But seems so many people associate wealth with home size and vice versa, and buy the biggest house they can afford.

Well I guess that only matters if you give a crap what others think about your financial situation. If someone wants to assume I am rich, poor, or somewhere in between, let them. I couldn't care less what people think .

Our home is 53 feet long and 15 feet wide at the widest point with a point on the front and narrowing towards the rear. If it was a perfect rectangle, it would be 795 sq ft, but of course it's considerably smaller than that.
No wheels, but it can go anywhere on earth there is 7 feet of water.
We can store enough food for 6 people for 90 days and we make drinking water from sea water, so we are fine in that department. Everything we own is aboard our 3 bedroom, 2 bath, waterfront home.
Needless to say, we certainly would not need a larger place ashore. When we do visit friends ashore we always come away mystified why anyone would need that much space.

Live in one of those clown cars, the smart car.
Very snug if you like that

I think the smaller homes are cute, no need for the grand ballrooms; more space literally for the birds and the bees, the flowers and the trees. I have a similar problem - more space than I really want or need, but the home is beautiful and filled with stuff. The little houses look attractive to me too, but there are other options - how about partitioning your home into 4 parts, and creating a multiple home? I am thinking about staring a commune, and sharing the space with others. Options of all sorts if one is willing to give a little space to other voyagers on spaceship earth.
The little houses on wheels really do look comfortable though; a wonderful choice, and you can apply your surplus income to any number of other things rather than to the house.

There are companies that make pre-fab houses for minimalists who want to live a simple life.

  • I hate apartments but love smaller sized homes.
