Not only is it normal, but you are one lucky person to not have those dreaded coughs.
Maybe you just think you haven't. And never say never cause you never know in the future you could very likely and what about when you were a kid?
No, it's not normal. The vast majority of people cough. Anyone who says this is normal probably means that they think you're "lucky".
However, coughing is the mechanism by which you eradicate excess mucus from the trachea. It helps you breathe when you're congested. I would seriously consider mentioning this to your GP at next visit. If you ever have trouble breathing when you're sick, call for help immediately.
That's what I was thinking. I should have added as well that although I don't smoke, being around it doesn't make me cough; I don't know if that is unusual.
I have to cough voluntarily, apart from if food has 'gone the wrong way'.
Puzzling. I think it's a great idea to voluntarily "cough" when you realize others are coughing or are clearly uncomfortable with the breathing conditions. If your lungs don't have an automatic way of protecting themselves, I assume that could have serious repercussions.
