Is it normal i think we should add a new icon/symbol for internet speak?

I think we should make a new icon or something to represent sarcasm. Since it tends to confuse people and no one understand when someone is or isn't being sarcastic. Some people try to be sarcastic and depending on the content it is questionable if they are serious or not. So I think we should add something like an *S* at the end for (sarcasm).

Yes I agree with this 14
I do not believe it is necessary 7
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

No I think the person who doesn't understand your sarcasm isn't worth of using sarcasm again.

Isn't it the funniest when the person you're being sarcastic to doesn't get it, though? Even funnier when everyone else gets it except them. I feel like to be so blunt about it sort of kills it a bit. It's like when someone tells a joke and then points out that they just told a joke. I think sarcasm is usually too blatant online, which is a shame, because I think it's funniest subtle. So, no, I don't really like the idea of a symbol. Although, in certain situations it could work. Depends what you're going for. Sometimes completely over the top is hilarious. But then if it's over the top you probably won't need a symbol, would you?:S

I agree with dinz as well. I see a lot of people use emoticons. I sometimes use ;) or :P or even :| if I'm being sarcastic, although not always. And using those emoticons doesn't necessarily mean I'm being sarcastic either.:P

    • Well I am saying some people will say stuff that you can not tell. Since we are online and you have no verbal indication. Some things on other hand are taken as sarcastic just because of negative connotation.

Some people also assume something is sarcastic and will say something like "I took my dog for a walk". Which they assume people will get. I have also seen a lot of frustration and fighting over someone misreading or not understanding it.

This happens through text since some phrases already sound sarcastic and some are neutral. Unless said in a certain way. So I believe this would be helping communication issues on the internet and in text.

Well there is actually a sarcasm symbol; it hasn't really caught on, and maybe there's a reason for that. It's pretty useless.

I have absolutely no idea what relevance taking your dog for a walk has, and a symbol isn't going to make it more clear. Not sure what point you were making with that example, to be honest.

If anybody cares that much, they can just write a short sentence saying that they were being sarcastic, or simply write "sarcasm" at the end.

        • My point some things can be sarcastic but don’t sound sarcastic unless you add a tone to it. Since Some things do not sound bad or good. what is the sarcasm symbol. Like you ask someone what they are doing today and they say "Im walking the dogs". So you go to ask you what kind of dogs they have and the reply is "You fucking dumb ass! I don't have dogs! Why are you so stupid?" Even if it had no previous indication. It is just assumed you realized it.

Well in that case it shouldn't be assumed. That person is being stupid, and that really isn't a funny joke to make in the first place. And Google the sarcasm symbol and you'll see what I mean.

I occasionally would use o_-" to note sarcasm or end the sentence with ....

I generally toss " " around a word or phrase to add emphasis and make it rather obvious. Usually works.
