Is it normal i think they should show some of the south park eps to students?

I think some of the south park episodes should be shown to school children. Yes it has toilet humor and fowl language. However I think some of the episodes send a very good message about some real issues going on in the world. Like the hate crime episode. That and the Sexual harassment episode. I do not speak of university's either. I think schools holding children age 13 up maybe. I also think these type of political issues should be discussed more with younger children. So they are ready to make informed decisions when they are adults.

I always assumed that South Park was made for adult audiences because it's often meant ironically. The message presented is the opposite of the message intended. I'm not suggesting children don't understand irony but I would say that it's an acquired sense and so you're more likely to understand it the longer you've lived.

For instance, I don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility that someone could watch it and think it's funny to level verbal abuse against fat people, poor people, gay people, any kind of people. Adults will do that too, and they've got not excuse. As for younger people, I think there's the potential of this being a confusing message.

I keep thinking of the line from the Simpsons:

Marge (to Homer): Kids can be so cruel.
Bart (overhearing): We can? Thanks, mom! (runs off to be cruel to someone).

    • Well it also shows that cart-men is fat because of his insecure mother who is not raising him right and gives him whatever he wants.

Which as a result makes him very insecure and this creates his horrible habits. Why he has so many problems and why he is such a little bastard.

I also know most of the episodes would be bad to show but some of the videos do not have as much of this. I did think of that though.

Absolutely! That's the beauty of South Park. There is a depth to it that you can appreciate with analysis. I know I wouldn't have spotted that at 13, though.

Having said that, I didn't understand Shakespeare or Dickens either and I was taught to appreciate it by having it explained. I don't see why South Park couldn't be given the same treatment. Like, if an episode was shown then pupils were asked what they thought of it, and - if nobody spotted why Cartman is like he is - it could be explained. Cartman is a nice little caricature of an only child, spoilt by his mother, absent father, frustrated, prone to tantrums...

        • Well I did not mean every single episode either. I mean some of the episodes where the message is cut and dry. Like the one where Kyle's dad starts to sue everyone.

That teaches that all money comes from somewhere and nothing is free. Which is also a good economic lesson for children.

The episode with the dog whisperer explains why cart men is so fucked up. Which is really kind of sad.

The one where the kids all claim their parents molested them could actually be spun as a decent addition to reading The Lord of the Flies.

  • Kids take southpark the wrong way though. Only adults seem to get the satire.

I'm similar to OP. I watched South Park as a kid due to the fact that I thought the way they played humour into the social commentary was clever and I had no idea there were other shows like it until I was much older and I can absolutely say it contributed to my "ironic asshole" sense of humour (not the over the top toilet jokes) + the way I view different opinions on social issues and current events. I would've turned out like that anyway, but South Park was something I could definitely relate to.

I'm actually surprised by the responses you got. I expected the reaction to just be outright "NO" but I guess not. Pleasant surprise.

South Park is a satire. I think they should show some episodes, like perhaps the Native American one where they had the same thing happen in real life, only the.residents of South Park (none of them are Native American) pushed onto a reservation of their own. It was a really good episode, not so much comedy-wise as satirical.

But yes, I agree with you some episodes should be shown. They have to be watched beforehand though, of course.

It's good too because all episodes can be found on the official website. The downside is (I think, unless you can change the settings) all episodes are uncensored.

    • Well I bought a few of the seasons and I like most of them. Some of the episodes do not really have a lot of cursing but talk about real issues that people do not understand. Like the sexual harassment episode shows that all money comes from somewhere and nothing is free. A concept that a lot of people just do not understand. That and not sue for everything because it is just stupid and should not be done unless you are really wronged and not abused.

My cousin has a South Park plushie. When she showed it to me, she said, "It's sorta inappropriate."

But I mean, they should understand they're just watching drawings.
