Is it normal i think princess diana was overrated

Not a single fibre in me doubts that Princess Diana was a good person. She had great involvement in charities and such, worthy of praise. However, I think that she received too much attention. There are and were plenty of famous figures as well as everyday heroes who are involved in charities and work tirelessly to improve humanity, and I do not see why Princess Diana was smothered with love just because of that. I believe that her death was truly tragic, and I feel the loss that her sons had to go through.

However, I do not think she in particular deserved to be showered in THAT much fame, nor does she deserve to be placed as the 3rd best Briton.

Is it normal to feel this way?

It's normal. The whole royal family is overrated.

They are not extraordinary examples of human beings. They have not accomplished anything of great value. They were merely handed power and wealth by their ancestors, many of whom were brutal tyrants that treated human beings like vermin.

I'm sure they could be decent people, but they are just actors and puppets, playing their roles to keep the public content with their celebrity, and securing the steady flow of tax-dollars from the peasants pockets into their bank accounts.

At best they are overrated, at worst they are scam artists (whether they know it or not), selling their illusion of superiority.

I still have the newspaper from the day after she died, in 1997. I actually brought it out and opened it for the first time just the other week. So spun out reading a paper from the 90s! Sure makes you realize the inflation over the years more than anything

But yeah Diana. Great person, beautiful woman. Of course the tabloids are always going to be crazy over a royal icon. In fact I'd go so far as to say the papparazzi are directly responsible for her death. Ironic that the people who loved her killed her by their needs to follow her in the tabloids, fuelling the paparazzi obsession with her and ultimately her untimely death.

I agree. The paparazzi ARE directly responsible for her death. They literally hunted the poor woman down!

I also agree with Terence_the_viking and Mooohgertje.

    • She died in 1997, as a result of a car crash in France.

While it isn't something I'd ever think much about, maybe because I don't know many royalists, I agree with you on every single point. I'm sure she was a very good person, and she certainly sounds like the best royal we've had for a long time.

But the third greatest Briton ever? I didn't know that poll existed, but it makes interesting reading. I wonder if the results would be the same now, after a longer time had lapsed after Diana's death?
A lot of people might have done the same good Princess Diana did. I doubt that many would have done, but we'll never know since very few people had the same opportunities. Was the good she contributed really greater than that of someone like Charles Darwin or Isaac Newton? Or Alan Turing, who's story just as much if not more tragedy than Diana's?

I think Diana remains so well-loved by so many people because her life has a certain tragedy and Hollywood-ready feel about it. That and the fact it was so comparatively recent. The disrespectful way she was treated by the other royals justly exposes them in a personal way we don't usually get the chance to see, and there's no denying she was a good person who did a lot more good than most people.
