Is it normal i think of years like this

So I was born in 1999, so most of my life I’ve been used to calling the current year “two thousand-“ or “twenty-“ And so on. But whenever people say the name of a year before then, it sounds like a mouthful, and really old fashioned. Even “nineteen-ninety-nine” sounds like an ancient time to me, and the idea of having any year that starts with “19” in the future seems really weird to me. Being born at the very end of it, everything from the 20th Century backwards seems like another world to me, and actually living then is something I can’t really imagine.

Now maybe it’s just how long the name of the year is. “Twenty-twenty” is short and straight to the point. But like I said earlier “nineteen-ninety-nine” sounds long and drawn out, and just sounds old. But I guess if you just say the last bit, like “99” it doesn’t seem as old. Idk, does anyone else my age feel this way? And anyone not, do you understand what I’m saying here?

"Everything from the 20th Century backwards seems like another world to me, and actually living then is something I can’t really imagine."

I remember when 1984 was a big deal. I remember when 1999 was a big year cause they were worried about Y2K compliancy. Yeah, they thought computers would crash and basically the world would end in darkness.

In the 1900's though, yeah we typically would just call the year in two digits. I was born in 74. I started school 81. Graduated in 93.

To ME, it still sounds and feels weird to think we are in the 2000's. Like in less than six months, we will be in the 20's. My mind still thinks 1920's.

For the record, when us Gen Xer's were kids in the 80's, we didn't think the world would last until 2000. It just seemed so far away. Thinking of year 2000 was like thinking we would have civilizations on other planets if we didnt die in world war 3.

Kids I gotta tell you - it is true, the older you get, the faster time seems to go. For me, the 80's seemed an eternity, good or bad parts. Lately, I am wondering where the hell the 2010's went? One day in 2010 I moved to where I live now, and from there it is just a blur.

Same. Knowing 2020 is so close fills me with a strange feeling of sadness. Half because I'm getting old, half because I'm disappointed we still don't have spaceships.

Time does seem to be speeding up as we age... I remember going to Germany to study in 2011. I messed about in the army before going to university, studied, graduated, swapped jobs a few times, was depressed af, started selling cars, made a business and here I am. Most of my friends are now married and have children.

And somehow it seems like yesterday when we'd host parties in each other's dorm rooms and go to the lake during summer and drink until we pass out.
It seems like yesterday when I got my drivers license and my Mercedes. Back in 2010, she was just 5 years old. I was the definition of cool XD
Now my C-class is 14 years old... Damn!

It's kinda depressing to think that my 3 most beloved cars are all within the 12-14 year range and cost a total of 15 grand. Cars most people would describe as "an old Mercedes", not a classic one, but an old one.
Still, I keep reminding myself that those babies once cost a fortune and I should keep them looking like they cost a fortune.

I feel you, I was born in 1996 and I feel like the pre-2000s were a darker, blander and more cramped time period. When I picture the turn of the century I picture everything bursting into technicolour.

I know this isn’t true and I just think this way because I scarcely remember the 90s. Infact the beginning of the 2000s co-incided with a boom in the quantity and detail of my autobiographical memories.

A year starting “nineteen” does sound old fashioned, almost quaint. I’m sure in many years it will become an age-related insult, “Your momma so old her year of birth starts with 19” or along those lines.

I always thought saying 19-whatever was cool.
On topic, I use the last two digits for 1970 to 1999. So I'd say '99, or '86. But that doesn't really work for 2000s. You can't really say back in '05. It sounds weird, at least in my mind. I say 2002, or 2015 like it is and say '97 when referring to 1997. Now for a bit of 90s nostalgia.

I miss the late 90s and early 2000s. Rushing home from school to watch Swat Kats (freaking cats flying jets), Scooby doo, the Mask and the animated Godzilla series on our bigass CRT TV. I had a walkman as a kid, then a discman and then an mp3 player. Only the cool kids had portable music.
We had a VHS player and my mom and dad would give me cash to rent out movies. It's nostalgia that stays with you forever.

My dad had a 1996 Mazda 626 automatic with climate control and a cassette player with an auto reverse function.
In Eastern Europe air conditioning and automatic was considered top luxury. And my dad had that!
Heck, even nowadays those features are a luxury of sorts, but that's another story.

I liked the music. Even the most generic pop songs were catchy and fun. Music videos were artistic and cool with no spinning fruit on turntables, or rappers with serious speech impediments having a seizure on screen.

Speed cameras were used only in a few places.

Dial up internet was shit tho XD

Nineteen ninety nine only has one more syllable than twenty nineteen and the same as two thousand nineteen.

Nope sorry, it doesn't seem normal and I am the same age as you.

  • I was born in 1991 and any memories I have of that decade seem like another universe to me. It’s weird to think we had dial-up internet, grainy t.v., no smart phones, shitty looking cars, etc. Man just brought out the nestolgia for me. Lol

In 1991 I was learning how to drive.

Seems long ago but I have distinct memories of that year. What shocks me is that babies born that year will be 30 before too long. I mean if my lover and I at the time had gotten pregnant, he or she would soon be 30.
      Jeeze I am old.

I do not know which is worse - grainy or pixellation.

OR when the damn picture would just start rolling for no reason. If the TV was really bad, you had to hit it a few times as you adjusted the vertical hold.
Be sitting there, thinking it calmed down and for NO reason, it would roll again.

          Pixellation, definitely.

Miss the days of hitting the tv. Today, you'd knock them into the next room. Of course, you needed a small army to rearange the living room and move them damn console tv's.

          Thanks for the memories.

  • Maybe cause growing up it was always a 2000 something? So to think of something else like 1900 seems weird. Idk I kinda feel that way cause it’s like I didn’t actually enjoy much 90’s. I mean for sure I remember a lot of 90’s shit and it’s not like as soon as 2000 hit things changed but times did change fast, like usual. When I think of what I loved as a kid it’s so crazy different nowadays that although I’m not old to think of 90’s stuff I loved makes me feel old. Which ik I hear it sometimes I’m basically not a 90’s kid cause 1998 is pretty much nothing of 90’s but I do remember a lot from it. Really wish I could try another blue barrel drink again too. Honestly I’m glad I grew up the time I did life seemed more simple without phones constantly in kids hands. I remember just basic stuff even had a cd player. Would always watch vhs movies and be outside playing for fun. Back when my ps1 had some badass graphics too and I’d think I’m playing spyro with my brother till I get older and realize my controller was never plugged in.

You're so cute! I was born in 1970,so I remember the 19's quite well. To me, saying 2000-something sounds odd. I do miss the 20th century, because things were much simpler then.
