Is it normal i think my friend has schizophrenia?

Ive known this person since the early days of elementary school. Recently we ended up going to the same college (for different majors though). At the beginning of the semester we were hanging out practically every day because we didn't know anyone. Maybe a month in to the school year we started to branch out our friend circle. He told me that he was hanging out with all these people and that he had interest in this girl... Cool, fine, dandy, what started to worry me was that when we did hang out, he would start to talk to imaginary people. For example, we were on a not so busy street and he would start yelling at people telling them to watch where they were going and stuff but no one actually bumped into him. (It started to happen more frequently after that). The thing that really tipped me off was that he wanted me to meet this girl he was hanging out with one day and when I got there, no one was actually there. he kept pointing to the air next to his body but no one was actually there... He got really pissed off at me because I hurt this so called girls feelings. To me she wasn't there... Right now I want to tell him that there might be something wrong with him but he wont answer my calls or texts. He doesn't want to talk to me anymore... Is he crazy, am I crazy? What should I do?

  • Is he still young? Living with parents? Are his parents still alive? If so, tell them. He's branching away from you and it might be better if he hears it from people he is still close to.

        • Hes not very close with his dad (or any family to my knowledge) so that only leaves his friends... It will be easy to get in contact with them but the tricky part is will they be able to actually help?

          • Ask them if they have noticed it about him, too.

It would be an amazing plot twist if you actually were schitzophrenic and imagining someone that doesn't exist talking to people that don't exist. SCHITZCEPTION!

I'm sorry, it sounds like your friend has broken with reality.

He needs to be committed for observation if ur accurately describing his behavior. That is not normal. I would be extremely worried that I can't contact him. Do something. Because no one else will and it might be too late.

Take him to the hospital and get him assessed.

  • It seems odd that he is actually interacting with her as if she was physically there.
Usually with schizophrenia, hallucinations of other people are hearing them talk and seeing shadow people or other distortions. It would be rare for someone to see somebody sitting there no different than a real person. It would be like mistaking a ghost for a physical entity.
The brain is a complex thing where much can go wrong, so it's possible to see hallucinations like actual people, but it would be extremely uncommon. I go to the weekly schizophrenia support group and have never heard somebody describe their hallucionations that way.

      • I really don't know, but if he is hallucinating it is possible and it sounds severe. Other noticable schizophrenia symptoms are being incoherant, acting weirder than usual, flattened emotions and coming up with beliefs that don't make sence. You can learn more at schizophrenia.com.
It could also be possible that he is on drugs, or he could be a pathological liar. Who knows. He should probablly see a psych doc though if he cannot function.
