Is it normal i think dogs are cute but i don't really like them

Most dogs are cute, I pet them, play with them, have taken care of them in shelters or for family, and I have no hate against them, but a lot of their behaviors are disgusting / annoying so I'd never want one myself.

It's funny because I think of dogs in the way many dog-lovers think of humans (they seem to have this sort of sarcastic hatred towards humanity and like to brag about how "anti-social" they are for preferring dogs).

honestly I prefer cats over dogs, dogs are generally more dirty and develop disgusting habits. I don't hate them though, dogs are awesome and I have one of my own, I just find cats personally more cleaner and easier to care for.

    • Same! Dogs can be cool I just don't really think they're a good pet for me personally. Actually, I don't really want a cat either, even though I love them. but that's more of an emotional thing (I had 1 cat before and never want to "replace" him - too sad).

I adore dogs and easily tolerate their behaviours, but I can see why someone wouldn't. They get in your face and insist that you like them and their smells and fluids.

Totally agree about that weird bragging thing, and it's not just dogs, it extends to many things, especially babies - "hey guys, I don't like babies! They are annoying and overly dependent. I bet you've never heard anyone say that before, are you impressed?".

  • My family's dog is cute. It's sweet and well-behaved, but I'm sorry that I can't get over how gross it can be.

The copious amounts of thick drool, smelliness, and overall grossness of this outside dog make me nope out of hanging out with her most of the time.

    That's a shame.

It'd be better if I actually taught her to play catch or something.

Sometimes I give her treats, or we chase each other around, which doesn't involve her mouth touching me.

HOW COULD YOU NOT LIKE DOGS?

    • Ok, maybe "not like" is the wrong way to put it. to be honest I prefer just about any other pet than a dog. But they're still cute and can be fun, in small doses. I prefer cats too btw :)

        • I actually don't like hamsters much either lol. I like other rodents though, i've had gerbils and mice and i think they're cuter and nicer than the hamsters I've known. I really want a parakeet or 2 someday.

My brother had pet turtles once and they were cute too.

If you approach a dog with fear or dislike they can usually sense it and they will try and scare you off. Dogs need to know who is the Alfa male. Once they understand whos in control it's usually downhill from there. It will be easier. But habits like what ? When they kick and clean themself? You wish you could lick yourself. Thats it, you are jealous.

the "alpha male" concept is outdated and not true. the original study was conducted with wolves however they were not wild wolves they were captive wolves that were not related to each other which caused constant outbreaks of fighting and hostility, however this research and claim that "wolves are always fighting to be the top alpha" was then passed onto dogs. in the wild wolf packs work as family units, there is a male and female pair and their offspring, it's extremely rare that a non-related wolf would join the pack.

I love dogs but I honestly don't like taking care of them. Too much work. I loved my Pitty but I wouldn't get another one.

I agree with you on that point.

They are fun to pet if I come across one, but I wouldn't take it home.

  • I'm not a pet lover and I do find it annoying how many people let there cats on tables and countertops and laying on furniture. Its nasty to me. Dogs are not much better especially bigger dogs.

This sounds completely normal! I'm scared of spiders but those pictures of close-up tarantula eyes are adorable! And as long as you're not harming the dogs, it's fine.

As a dog lover and someone who is definitely the type to prefer dog interaction over human, I see nothing wrong with what you’ve said. If you’re nice to dogs or at least not mean to them, what’s wrong about that?? I think it’s a great thing for someone who doesn’t particularly care for them to still be kind to them!

  • I think I still prefer dogs over cats. I prefer their personalities, they can protect people, they're cuter, and they don't kill millions of wild birds :p.

The bird thing is true, and it's such a shame. Cats are too good at hunting. I live in Australia and the cats here have dessimated the local wildlife. That's why my cat is a rescue, and we keep her indoors. She gets supervised play time in the garden every day, but she only kills insects. If anything bigger gets her attention I intervene.

Thanks, my cat disagrees. She gets so pissy at me when I pick her up and take her away from the birds. Kind of like a kid being dragged away from a birthday party.
