Is it normal i think being racist could be considered a minor mental disability

I think that serious racism has a pretty bad effect on the racists life. The become socially isolated, miss out on opportunities in life, can't operate in a diverse society and it seems to make them pretty unhappy. If you look at the serious racists they don't seem happy and they are often filled with rage. Its got to have a negative effect on their quality of life.

I don't think so. I think it's our natural instinct to be racist and that, individually, we reason with ourselves that it's unfair and irrelevant in our mixed societies.

What do you consider a race though? In the 19th century the Irish were considered to be an entirely different race to the British. Yet very few people would consider them a separate race today.
Races are a social construct. In Roman times they considered anyone a stones throw from their hometown to be an entirely different people.

Exactly. Racism is a misleading word because it's derived from race and what I meant doesn't strictly apply to race. But it's the word we're stuck with and so I had to use it. In my head, I was thinking of the origins of man when I answered the question and so "tribe" would be as good a word as any, even if those tribes are made up of people with the same genetic identity. Which, if taken to its logical conclusion (i.e. schisms within families themselves), could be seen as reductio ad absurdum.

I agree; humans tend to be afraid of and hostile to the unknown or unusual because it might be dangerous.

This is one case where we need to step above human nature and recognise that this is irrational in our current society.

    No.

There are multiple reasons for racism. Some of it is basic fear of the unfamiliar and different, some of it is personal experience, some of it is ignorance, some of it is misinformation and propaganda.

Just as sexism isn't a 'mental disability', just as ageism isn't a 'mental disability'. Racism is one of many prejudices we experience in society.

I understand your point - that harbouring unpopular views can cause people to become recluses - however you'd have to look at the cause of the racism. You could then determine if it's a symptom of some wider psychological problem or not. Either way, the racism in itself would NOT be the 'mental disability'.

No, IT IS THEIR FAULT AND THEIR RESPONSIBILITY!!!!!! Is every bad thing you do a "disease" now? I wasn't racist, but I used to hate another group of people, and that was a FLAW, a bad thing that I was, not a sickness I had!

In today's society, you can go to a school and shoot people, and be pardoned for being "mentally unstable".

If someone poked out their eyes or cut off their legs on purpose, they would be disabled and it would be their fault and responsibility. Also I never even mentioned disease. That you got thumbs up for your thoughtless comment makes me worry about people.

It's not inherently 'their fault' - people can be racist for many reasons, some of which are caused by factors the individual has no control over i.e. other people's fault.

For example, a black American slave of the 1700s may well harbour racist views against all white Americans based primarily on their negative experience of white people. Does that make their racism their fault?

I'm racist primarily against blacks (I am not white) but it doesn't interfere with me working with them or getting along with them for the most part. I simply despise the black race and feel they should stop reproducing or just go live in Africa.

Over my long life I've found that blacks as a race the worst group of humans you could ever know (aside from muslims-but they're not a race). A few individuals are nice and I can tolerate them, but I prefer that they date/marry their own race-but sterilization would be better.

I'm not alone in my thinking, many friends and co-workers think alike, including non-white cop friends of mine.

I'd save a black person from drowning if I could, but I wouldn't keep them as friends and I'd never let my daughter/son (if/when I have kids) date them. I used to be more open-minded but the more I got to know blacks over time, the less I grew to like them.

Don't get me wrong, I dislike other people as well, there are socioeconomic classes of whites I'd never associate with and that I find repugnant, but blacks take the cake for me. Also I despise black culture, that whole thug/rap shit, it's garbage.

Oh and in response to the OP, I'm quite happy and content with my life, despite being a racist. So much for your silly notion of what we're like.

Really? You want to make this a disorder? We already have enough bullshit disorders. Yes racism is very unpleasant but I do not think its a mental disorder. Also can you imagine trying to enforce this?

One person makes a slightly racist joke with friends and suddenly he is on medication. Forcing people to sleep with a race they don't find attractive. People being too scared to mention what a criminal looks like to the police since they don't want to be in an asylum.

Do we need more ways of restricting a persons rights? We all drug up children for bull shit like ADD/ADHD against their will. Instead of teaching them coping skills instead.

I hate racism yes but labeling it as a mental disorder has very dangerous outcomes. Now no if someone is going around in a white cloke saying "Kill all black people!" clearly they have a serious problem.

However this is way too easy to abuse. I have seen people of colour pick on people and when you ask them to stop they call you a racist. I have seen people tell people off for using the term "Gay" when referring to a homosexual person.

Even though they made a commercial saying its rude to use "Gay" as a doregitory term since it offends "Gay" people. So does that mean we are suddenly able to use gay as a bad term now? Since gays do not want it to have anything to do with them?

I disagree with racism but I don't see this going down well. People can say you are racist since you told them the person who attacked you was White, African, Hispanic. Since you are apparently saying all people of that race are bad since you said ONE person of that race harmed you.

There was this Woody Allen movie in which a guy had been a republican his whole life, then doctors found he wasn't getting enough oxygen to his brain, fixed his condition, and then he turned into a democrat. Just saying.

Do you think they were mentally ill?

Racism lapses into fear which lapses into xenophobia. It's a slippery slope that erodes your mental health.

I think you have a point that the consequences of being racist can be disabling to the racist. But it is not a disability in the sense that one can not choose to be or not be disabled, whereas one is quite capable of choosing to be or not be racist.

It could be considered a symptom of lack of/reduced empathy, which could be considered a symptom of mental illness. But no, being racist doesn't mean you are mentally ill.

Please do not use -ists or -isms. Please also try to not use the word 'race' in that context. Please use the word 'tribe' instead.
