Is it normal i think america should move towards communism?

America, unlike Eastern Europe a century or so ago, is relatively wealthy and highly industrialized. I think that America would be able to effectively institute a real communist style of society, rather than end up failing like the poor, nonindustrial societies that have attempted to transition to communism in the past. Marx even believed that communism would be most effective in the wealthier parts of the world, believing that poorer countries would be unable to institute communism due to their weak infrastructure and lack of industrial resources.

And don't give me any of that "BUT COMMUNISM FAILED! WHEN WILL YOU COMMIES LEARN!?!?!?!?" Democracy failed both in Greece and Ancient Rome, and yet plenty of people insist that it's a great thing today. I say communism is worth another go.

Communism is an economic system and democracy is a political system, you can have both. It is possible to elect your leaders in a communist system. Some will argue that if all you have to choose from is communists what is the point? But we elect only capitalists now so it's the same thing really. There are different levels and different ideas of both capitalism and communism, so it is still possible to choose from people with different points of view.

I do not believe that communism is doomed to failure just because it is communism, but I'm also not sure that it is right for the US. Marx did believe that it works best in a wealthy society. But I think it works best in a small society. Like a community working together for the benefit of everyone where everyone does their part and is cared for. But it requires a lot of government involvement and oversight in individual lives. That is just really hard to manage in a country with over 300 million people. But if a workable system were developed, I wouldn't be opposed to it, I would interested.

You might have better luck with a move towards socialism, which is increasing in popularity with younger voters. But that doesn't always stick. After all, the hippies of the 60's and 70's grew up to be the yuppies of the 80's. Before some of you former hippies start yelling at me, I know you all didn't go yuppie lol.

    • True - I sometimes use the terms (socialism, communism) interchangeably, which can be confusing to some.

What is your opinion of the labor theory of value?

I am familiar with the concept, but I don't feel I am knowledgeable enough to rate it's effectiveness in determining a value. I would say that as a layman, labor based value would seem to work for somethings but not everything. But, I actually believe that all systems of determining value are just rationalizations. Because the value of everything is simply what people think it is worth. That is true if you base value on labor or anything else.

Look at the gold standard. Many people will disagree with this, but I think basing the dollar on gold makes no difference. The reason is that a dollar is just a peice of paper whose value is based on what society believes it is worth. Gold is just a yellow chunk of rock whose value is also based on what society believes it is worth. The gold standard just fixes the value of paper to the value assigned to yellow rocks. It is all rationalization.

Communism only works in small, tightly-knit communities.
The USA is a huge country, both in population and size, not to mention it is incredibly individualistic.

Some communist-esque policies have their place, but there's no way to completely destroy The Market. Consider Cuba: citizens received regular cigar rations. However, as time has gone by, people liked smoking less, so they started trading their cigars for other stuff. At the end of the day, people have preferences, and they make decisions based on those preferences.

    • True. The capricious nature of consumers could pose a problem to a planned economy; a mix of the two might be more effective.

  • Dear old codger on a boat,

I keep deleting your comments because you have nothing to contribute around here. You just keep barking 'troll' based on no evidence. At this point, YOU are the troll.

    Signed,

Oh sure, you want to hear only what you want. I would have said that communism IS a failed system and given ample proof, but you already said YOU didn't want to hear anything except, "Oh yes, you are so right and sooo smart."
In my book, that makes you a troll, nothing more or less. So delete away if folks post what you don't want to hear.
You cite two failures of capitalism, but there are hundreds of failures of communism to be cited. Economically communism works on paper because it is based on a system of forced labor, for zero compensation. At one time that was called SLAVERY. The slave owners provider shelter, food and all the NEEDS of their labor force, too. But honestly, how much does an uneducated worker need?

      • Running around and croaking "troll" like a broken record of a parrot isn't what I had in mind when it comes to legitimate criticism. I've heard the criticism of "but it failed!!!" thousands of times, hence why I didn't want to hear it again. If you have something of substance, contribute; otherwise, piss off.

You may not be aware of this, but the world is not a fucking debating society. Capital must be allocated to where it provides the most return, labor is an expensive resource and must be limited with increasing productivity. And, markets are by far the best distributors of realtime information that that has ever existed, even in ancient times.

Your defense of socialism is achedemically capricious at best, and rieks of complete ignorance of accounting, math, and statistics. Don't tell us these disciplines are irrelevant. YOU are irrelevant. A failed thinker from the 19th century.

  • I don't believe in a "full" communist government. I think our government should have more regulations voted upon by us.

We could try it, I suppose. I like the idea of that more than capitalism/corporatism.

I don't think it would work in a country that has a highly fragmented political scene.

In order for the system to work it would involve centralising power to one entity for it to work and this is one fundamental hurdle you will come across particularly in the United States.

    • Our system is government is purposefully set up to avoid this. "Separation of powers". I'd rather have it this way than risk a charismatic individual seizing power, especially with the weapons America has at it's disposal.

    • Gotta love how some folks are so intolerant of other ideas that they demand that others leave their country (and these are usually the people that whine about "free speech").

"...And when it came my time to serve,
I knew better dead than red.
But when I got to the old draft board,
Buddy this is what I said:
      Sarge, I'm only 18,
      I got a ruptured spleen,
and I always carry a purse.
I got eyes like a bat
      and my feet are flat
      and my asthma's getting worse.
      Oh think of my career,
      and my sweetheart dear
and my poor old invalid aunt!
      Cuz I ain't no fool,
      Imma goin' to school
and Imma workin' in a defense plant."
